The 2012 British science fiction drama The Dinosaur Project is about a group of explorers setting out on ill-fated journey in search of the elusive Mokele Mbembe; African’s own Loch Ness Monster. While exploring the region where the monster was last seen, the explorers happen upon a Jurassic world inhabited by creatures which were believed to be instinct for millions of years.
The movie uses reverse chronology technology, where the ending is revealed in the beginning. The movie opens up news announcements of missing explorers. Next scene is a group of men on a small boat that come across a backpack floating in the river filled. When they open the backpack up, they find recording equipment. Stomping, flying, and running at high speeds across the landscape is very typical of dinosaur flicks, and happens in this movie as well. The baby dinosaur is alike the others. It is not violent and in one scene protects the researcher’s son from being devoured by what appears to be a momma and papa dinosaur. Does this movie present the audience with incredible realistic shots of dinosaurs like the ones in Jurassic Park? Actually, considering that this is an Indie film and the budget was probably miniscule when compared to the budget for Jurassic Park, the images of the dinosaurs are somewhat close to what people think dinosaurs look like. Mokele Mbembe, the African Loch Ness monster, still elusive, adds to the adrenaline- fueled groups' adventure by attacking their boat, killing one of its occupants. Moreover, just like Jurassic Park, the majority of dinosaurs are vicious meat eating creatures eliminating anyone or anything that dare enter their territory. It is a run for your life movie. “The Blair Witch Project was one of the first successful found footage movies made” (Frappier, 2012). Since Blair Witch, other movies like Paranormal Activity, a supernatural horror movie, and Cloverfield (2008), a science fiction monster film, have also attracted a wide audience. Aside from the shaky camera scenes, found footage movies seem scarier and suspenseful because they because watching them makes you feel as though you are in the scenes, experiencing the same type of jump out of your seat horror or the pit in your stomach action.
