In his poem, The Raven, Edgar Allen Poe utilizes figurative language to create a suspenseful and macabre mood. Lost without his love, Lenore, the narrator battles his inner demons manifesting as a bird one tempest night. Throughout the poem, the raven consistently repeats the same word: “Quoth the raven, “Nevermore” (st. 8). Poe’s repetition of nevermore gives the reader a sense of frustration as the bird utters the word stanza after stanza. Even more eerie, the narrator's seems to frame his questions around the word creating a scene of despair and hopelessness.
