Feminism is simply a sociological theory, which states that men and women are equal.
Feminism is mainly concerned with giving rights to women by highlighting the numerous ways in which women have rendered to society. Feminist theorists believe in the social, political, and economic equality of genders and believe that each has his own rights as well as duties. They strive to give the oppressed women their full rights that are being taken every day.
History of Feminism
Feminism first started in the 1830’s as a basic sociological theory, saying that sociology did not acknowledge the experiences of women. In 1848, Elizabeth Stanton and Lucretia Mott spread the first Women’s Rights Convention in the birthplace of feminism, Seneca Falls, NY, that convention brought around 300 people. It was focused on the social, civil, and religious condition of women at that time. Feminism was developed in three main waves. The first wave took place between the late 19th century and the early 20th century. It was mainly focused on the women’s voting rights. In 1920, and after a long, tough, and severe struggle, women earned their right to vote. The second wave started in the 1960s and is still present to our day. This wave was concerned with different types of inequalities and oppressions carried by men against women including sexuality, violence, and abortion. It carried the slogan “The Personal is Political”. After that, post-feminism emerged from the 1980’s till present. It acknowledges that feminism has achieved its goals and that women have earned their rights. The third wave was developed in the early 1990’s. It gave a voice to feminists who were unrepresented by being seen as middle-class leaders of feminism.

Disadvantages of Feminism
On the other hand, feminism has a couple of disadvantages. Feminist literates have turned literary criticism into a sort of a battlefield in which every person is defending his own point of view. In addition, it has some drawbacks on women themselves. Men are now afraid to get married since they feel that women are now stronger and that they have a higher authority than before which might threaten their relationship. Men are also not responsible for protecting women since they are both equal which in turn puts women into all kinds of danger. Feminism might also be dangerous by creating an idea that women are anti-male and thus women will start refusing and neglecting every single man they see. This will cause a serious catastrophe in the society.
Whereas the women’s suffrage movements focused mainly on overturning legal obstacles to equality, the feminist movements successfully addressed a broad range of other feminist issues. The first dealt primarily with voting rights and the latter dealt with inequalities such as equal pay and reproductive rights. Both movements made vast gains to the social and legal status of women. Feminism is a major part of the short story, “The Story of an Hour” by Kate Chopin, which is a story that portrays women’s lack of freedom in the 1800s. Women had no rights, and had to cater to all of their husband’s needs. The main character in “The Story of an Hour” is a woman who suffers from heart trouble, named Mrs. Mallard. When Mrs. Mallard was told about her husband’s death, she was initially emotional, but because of her husband’s death, she reaped freedom and became swept away with joy.

Feminism also fights for equal opportunity for women in employment and education. A feminist is someone who advocates their support for women’s rights but is not restricted to only women; anyone who supports women’s rights and equality are feminists, including men. Feminism is not only about the females, it fights for gender equality for all. Feminist movements, or Women’s movements, campaign for reforms in household issues with domestic violence, political issues with equal pay, employment and maternity leave, and reproduction rights. All feminism movements fight for equal rights, but it cannot be conquered or be made known all at once. First wave feminism was mostly about women’s suffrage and political equality in general. Second wave feminism went more in depth about the social and cultural inequalities.
The purpose of this research project is to see who is considered a feminist, and why, in the eyes of three women and three men. To see what they believe the behaviors, ideologies, beliefs, and values of a feminist is. The participants have been interviewed and given questions towards feminism found in the textbook "The Psychology of Women" by Margaret Matlin. I chose to do this particular study because there seems to be a lot of controversy about just the word feminism. There are so many mixed beliefs about it. This seems like the perfect study to really see what women and men think about it, at least six participants think about it.

Even though society has distorted the ideals feminism was founded upon, some of the remaining true roots still hold true. While women are gaining equal opportunities in society, they need to not diminish the importance of working together with men to form a functional society. The widespread idea of quotas needs to be analyzed. People should be accepted into college or hired for a job because they are the most qualified, not because of their sex. Society has demented feminism as a harmful dogma because it has been an excuse, almost a cop-out by women who do not want to work for their acceptance. Both men and women need to realize the necessity that exists for each other to make society work.
