Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), which is also called Female Circumcision is practiced in 25 countries, mainly in Asia and Africa. An estimation of 136,797,440 women in Africa had been circumcised and about 2 million women is undergoing this procedure every year. Female circumcision is often performed for religious reasons in Islam. People who believe are in support of female circumcision, argue that their god Allah, "will not hear the prayers of women who are not circumcised". Female circumcision if often used as a method, to control the women's sexuality and it is believed that it is done to protect the women virginity. It is also believed that women lose sexual desire and thus preventing them from cheating on their husbands. Recently UNICEF and ialGO urged African authorities to stop FGM by educating local communities, families and young girls the disadvantage of FGM. The WHO is involved in educating women the consequences of FGM. February 2010, WISE (women Islamic initiative in spirituality and equality) reaffirmed that they will take all actions to abandon th FGM. The UN population fund and UNCEIF says that 8000 communities in Africa have agreed to abandon the traditional practices. The interventions of the TAM's has resulted a drastic reduction in FGM.
