Temptation:
Everyone faces temptation in his life, while few are able to resist temptation, others are taken over by the influential power it possess. The power of temptation causes one to oversee the evil and be consumed by the good because addiction exerts a long and powerful influence over one. When taken over by temptation, one craves for the object of addiction, losses of control over its use, and continues involvement with it despite adverse consequences. Those who are unable to resist the temptation become dominated by the object while others see the evil that the object holds. People become addicted to anything that gives them temporary relief, but has negative consequences that one cannot foresee because of the power of the addiction. …show more content…

Tolkien, the power of the Ring consumes many of the characters. Those who are blinded by the Ring do not see the evil contained within it. Such as Boromir, many of the hobbits become addicted to the Ring because they want to use it for selfish reasons. Boromir only sees the advantages the Ring can bring him because the addiction controls his thoughts by causing him to believe that the Ring is the only way to feel relief. When not sure what to do with the Ring, Boromir suggests to Frodo that “the Great Ring has come into our hands to serve us in the very hour of need?...Let the Ring be our weapon, if it has such power as you say. Take it and go forth to victory?” (Tolkien 300). He feels as though if he possess the Ring, he will have all the power and will feel comfortable in himself. He cannot see the negative impacts the use of the Ring could cause because of the addiction to power and the rush of dopamine when he receives power. This addiction even causes Boromir to become violent “suddenly he sprang over the stone and leapt at Frodo. His fair and pleasant face was hideously changed; a raging fire was in his eyes” (449). He cannot control his addiction and will do whatever it takes to get power. The temptation of power causes Boromir to lose sight of the good and be drawn toward the evil because of the cycle of addiction that he is unable to break free
