Fate in Agamemnon
Agamemnon is the first part of the trilogy known as the Oresteia. Agamemnon is a story where the main character sacrifices his own daughter to a God, Artemis to win a battle and then his wife revenge him for the sacrifice. The concept of fate plays an important role in the tilogy Agamemnon which led to the tragic endings of the play. According to the meaning of fate it means the development of events outside a person’s control, regarded as predetermined by a super natural power. Fate is what send Agamemnon to the war with Menelaus to fight against Paris, fate is what predetermined Agamemnon to sacrifice his own blood for the sake of his ship and companions and fate is what determined Cassandra his wife to plot to kill him and to revenge him for her daughter.
The first point is that fate determined Agamemnon journey to the war against Paris for ten years. “It goes at it goes now. The end will be destiny .You cannot burn flesh or pour unguents, not innocent cool tears, that will soften the god’s stiff anger”( Line 67-70).This quote was told by Chorus when the god Zeus send Agamemnon and Menelaus against Alexander for stealing Helen from her husband. Alexander and Helen flew away to troy therefore Agamemnon went to troy to fight with them for ten years. This is all predetermined by fate. When the Chorus said “it goes as it goes the end will be destiny”(Line 67-68) that means that things will come to pass in the way they are fated, no tears or burning of sacrifice will change the fate. No one can change the fate from occurring which predetermined the war against Troy. “With time, this foray shall stalk the castle of Priam. She believes in fate and says that whatever is predetermined to come will come to pass. If Agamemnon is fated to die by her plan let it be so. Cassandra also says to the chorus that he will also stand beside her and prove that her words are true and to proclaim that fate predetermined everything.
In conclusion, the trilogy Agamemnon connects with the concept of fate. In evrysingle part of the play fate is proved from the beginning till the end. Fate occurred when Agamemnon went to the battle, when he sacrificed his own daughter for the God and Cassandra revenging Agamemnon for sacrificing her daughter who was known as the house beauty .
