Fate Fate, the development of events beyond a person's control. Romeo and Juliet were born into two different families who were enemies. They eventually fell in love with each other but their love was forbidden. Their fate was for them to not be able to have a successful relationship. Despite all their efforts to defy and avoid their fate, all their efforts were in vain. In the play Romeo and juliet by Shakespeare the literary devices, foreshadowing and conflict showed that fate is inescapable. To begin Shakespeare's use of foreshadowing showed that fate is inescapable. During Capulet’s party Juliet, the daughter of Capulet fell in love with Romeo while unaware of his last name. Later in the story after Romeo married Juliet he became convinced that she was dead when he saw her in a grave. Because of this, he killed himself. Then Juliet, after waking up from a staged death saw Romeo dead and decided to take her life as well. The grave she was put in when she staged her death became her wedding bed with Romeo, since he died by her. The two tried very hard to be together and to defy fate but ultimately their fate was the reason their relationship could not be successful. Therefore, the quote proved that fate is inescapable. Juliet was given the fate of having her grave as her wedding bed and she was unable to escape it. Shortly after Romeo and Juliet realized their love they decided to be married by Friar Lawrence. The marriage was very quick and Friar lawrence gave the two a warning before he wedded them. He informed them, “These violent delights have violent ends and in their triumph die, like fire and powder”(2.6.9-10). This quote is a warning to Romeo and Juliet about their marriage that took place so quickly after they met and it foreshadows the quick and violent ending to their relationship. During Capulet’s party Romeo and Juliet met each other and fell in love with each other. As Romeo was leaving the party Juliet asked her nurse to go to Romeo and ask for his name. When the nurse returned she revealed to Juliet that Romeo is the son of montague, her father's enemy. Surprised, she said, “my only love, sprung from my only hate! Too early seen unknown, and known too late!”(1.5.140-141). This quote is Juliet talking about Romeo, her only love coming from her only hate, the montagues. This conflict between the families is the reason fate was against the two. From the beginning they were destined to not have a successful relationship because of the feuding families that they were born into. Despite all their efforts to escape their fate such as marrying in secret and faking Juliet's death they could not escape the fact that their relationship was destined to fail. Therefore, the use of conflict, person versus person proved that fate is inescapable. Romeo and Juliet were born into feuding families and their fate was for them to not have a successful relationship, this fate was ultimately inescapable. After capulet’s party Juliet, now knowing that Romeo was from the enemy family began to talk to herself. She later found out that Romeo was with her listening to her and she began to talk to him.
