In the story Farewell to Manzanar Jeanne the narrator and main character. Changes a lot threw out the story both physically and emotionally with all the things happening with her family and the people around her. Jeanne describes a lot on events like she is not apart of them and she is just watching which says alot about the head space she was in, while in Manzanar.

She was also way more opened mind and tried to do activities outside of school like baton twirling and ballet. She was also still very naive, In chapter 13 Jeanne was in baton twirling class when some girls messed with her. “you have to think about your clothing.” Mitsue would tell me. “A good dancer is recognized by her clothing, You should wear your stockings inside out and never, never wear any underpants.” this is what the girls told Jeanne to do and that is what she did indeed. Jeanne’s mom found out and told her to not listen to the girls anymore. This shows that even though she grew up a little her mind was still a bit childish in the sense that she didn't quite understand that the world could still do bad things to her. Towards the end of their interment Jeanne starts to become worried that the outside is not going to accept her do to the bad repatation the Japanese have after the second world war. “A burst of of a machine-gun fire, or a row of Burma-Shave signs saying JAPS GO BACK WHERE YOU CAME FROM.” this made Jeanne even more aware of the repatation her people had she started to think that everyone but her family hated her.
