In the novel, A Farewell to Arms written by Ernest Hemingway is about how this soldier falls in love with a nurse of where he stationed at in Milan. Ernest Hemingway bases his book off his experience during World War 1. He describes the conditions during the World War 1, the belief and non-belief of religion, and we also see the emotional distress of the soldiers at war. Ernest Hemingway describes the conditions during the World War 1. “A British major at the club told me that the Italians had lost one hundred and fifty thousand men…” (Hemingway) That was just Italy that whom it concerned. That also was just part of the war, but this gives you an idea of the destruction being caused during World War 1. The injuries that had happened during World War 1 were very severe. During World War 1 the soldiers had to believe in something to get them through difficult times, but for many they had other things they would believe in such as medallions or coins. For a hand full God was the only savior they could look up to for guidance and salvation from all the rage destruction between countries and men that was going on. In the novel Catherine states, “There's no way to be married except by church or state. We are married privately. You see, darling, it would mean everything to me if I had any religion. But I haven't any religion… You're my religion. You're all I've got” (Hemingway). She is saying that the only thing keeping her motivated on moving forward in life is her true love, Lieutenant Henry. Another quote to support this statement would be, “A man who loves God, he says, is not a dirty joke” (Hemingway 116). Henry cannot say that he does love God, but he does admit to fearing him
