Family in “The Public Enemy (1931)” A family is defined in different ways and at different perspectives based on the context and experiences of a person. Despite being a basic social unit that influences the society around it, a family remains a dynamic topic whose description has varied over time. To discuss the family and the definitions that the social unit this paper reviews and analysis the movie “The Public Enemy (1931)” produced by William. In regard to the analysis, this paper will explore the family as a social unit that is affected by the actions of each and every member in the family and the society. The movie “The Public Enemy (1931)” revolves around the lives of two young men who venture into crime despite having solid background and support of a solid family. In particular, the movie focuses on the family of Tom, his brother Mike and their ever loving mother. The description of the mother in the entire movie as a doting parent illustrates the type of love that defines a family. In all the scenes that the mother is involved, the movie portrays a family as a haven of love, care and concern as the woman gets to show her sons the life she wants for them. However, the family is described as a unit that allows people to interact with the larger social unit of a society. This is because the family is a unit within a large societal unit that involves different pressures especially for kids as they grow. Weiser (17) argues that every person has a way of living and determining their liberal life especially in the democratic world. In line with this point, the movie shows how Tom decided to lead his life despite the love of his doting mother. The director indicated over media interviews that he added the scene from what he faces at home especially when dealing with his wife. In conclusion, a family is presented as a haven of care and love and a social unit of teaching values, especially for growing kids. However, the family does not seclude a person from the larger society, thereby giving all the members a choice to live their own life. Through the review of the movie, Tom and Matt were used by the director to define family and cultural values.

In the movie, The Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood, Callie Khouri directs something of a powerful story between a mother and her daughter. The movie Life as a House (Wrinkler, 2002) tells something of the same; of a father and the fight for the love of his son. The two movies both portray the fight between parents and their children. The commonality between father and son and mother and daughter is portrayed through the troublesome children and the problems that they face together. The “abuse “ that these children have received has formed them into the people they are today. What these characters had become is something that they do not want to be. As we age, we begin to discover the importance of family as depicted through Life as a House and The Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood.

This shift undermines the roles of the parents, and forces the child to take on adult responsibilities at a premature age. We live in an on-the-go day and age where nothing seems to remain constant for any time at all, and with this lack of continuity we have lost a great deal of what was once an integral part of society. The thought of a child ascribing to a “home” devoid of anything infallible is not a pleasant one. If every parent would spare a moment in their busy, fast-paced lives to consider the impact of the dissolution of the traditional home upon our children, we might not need films such as “Milo and Otis” to instruct our children to dissociate home from the world around them.

In the article “The American Family” by Stephanie Coontz, she argued that during this century families succeed more when they discuss problems openly, and when social institutions are flexible in meeting families’ needs. When women have more choices to make their own decisions. She also argued that to have an ideal family women can expect a lot from men especially when it comes to his involvement in the house. Raymond Carver, the author of “Where He Was: Memories of My Father”, argued how his upbringing and lack of social institutions prevented him from building an ideal family. He showed the readers that his mother hide all the problems instead of solving them. She also didn’t have any choice but to stay with his drunk father, who was barely involved in the house. Carvers’ memoir is relevant to Coontz argument about what is needed to have an ideal family.

She leaves behind her redneck husband and white-trash upbringing. Melanie finds herself engaged to the cities most eligible bachelor and has to return to Alabama to request a divorce from her first love and confront her past ("Alabama," 2002).
Children who are fatherless are at a greater risk of drug and alcohol abuse (Consequences of Fatherlessness 3). If it was not bad enough, Tom was already at risk of becoming an alcoholic since the day his dad walked out the house. In the film, Tom is seen coming home late at night drunk. He leaves for long periods of times and comes back home really late and drunk. Amada notices and she asks him where he has been and he replies that he was out in the movies (Numen). When asked why, he says that the movies give him adventure which is something that he does not get to experience at the shoe warehouse. “The movies are a temporary escape from his boring daily routine at the Continental Shoemakers” (Pleasant Disguise 50). Amanda does not believe him and becomes afraid that Tom is becoming more like his father. Tom actually admits to being like his father when he is having a conversation with Jim the night he went over to their apartment. “I’m like my father. The bastard son of a bastard!” (Numen). He says this after he discusses with Jim his plans to leave his family in search for adventure like the people in the movies. Tom finally decides to leave them after Amanda yells at him for Jim’s engagement. This makes Tom furious because he was unaware that Jim was engaged. As he leaves he tells them that he is leaving to the movies, but this time is a lie because he never comes back
The idea of family is different from person to person. Regardless of the differences, everyone’s family is unique and special in their own way. No one can judge or discriminate against people for their meaning and interpretation of what a family looks like. For example, family may have two parents; one parent; or no parents (since these are brief phrases, semi-colons shouldn't be used). The variation and differences between families makes culture and society so diverse. Family does not have limitations or boundaries (true). As long as the definition of family contains the qualities of unconditional love, and endless support, help, and guidance; all different families (awk) will be able to succeed and achieve a greater feeling of happiness and a sense of belonging and acceptance.
The values and ethics in this novel are an importance to the family because it gives the children and adults a guideline and reminder on how to act and what they strive for.
