Oftentimes it is related to assimilation and adaptation, however these situations are not always seen as a force to completely change one’s views. The authors believe "that individuals are best served by professionals who understand the family, social milieu, and personal dynamics of their individual customer, patient or student" (Hildebrand et al. 5).
Interpersonal conflict is. Every relationship has conflict and determining on how the conflict is resolved or handled can make the relationship stronger or weaker. If someone is more easily to come up with a compromise rather than always getting their own way, they may have stronger relationships (Bevan and Sole, 2014). Since societies can be extremely divided at times, it is important to have a back bone and a community that understand your own values, customs, and practices. It has been said that “minority group” families, which in Canada or the United States, could be considered anyone who isn’t Caucasian, are less stable in form and function than families who are a part of the general societal “majority”. The television show is a frequently watched show and is liked by many viewers. Modern Family's storyline helps the families of viewers by being an influential and relatable show to different types of families. The show is about the lives of three different families that are all related. In the show there are Jay and Gloria, an intergenerational couple with two sons-- Manny (from Gloria’s previous relationship) and Joe, their new baby. Jay’s adult son Cameron is married to his gay partner Mitchell, and they adopted Lily from Vietnam. Finally, Jay’s daughter Claire is married to her heterosexual partner named Phil and they have three children. The show is influential to our culture today because it shows these different types of families and addresses controversial themes such as gay adoption, the different family connections and communications, intergenerational coupling, and acceptance of diversity within an extended family. The family is easy to relate to while watching because it is based off of real family situations.
Intersectionality is defined as the process of gender that is not an isolated status that we experience, but instead it intersects with other identities, such as race, class, sexuality, ability, ethnicity, body size, etc. (Prohaska, 2015). Intersectionality happens with everyone. In my instance, I am a white, middle-class, lesbian, able-bodied, 20 year-old, female, who lives in a heteronormative society. That is my identity, and each component of that is experienced in part with the others, they all intersect. I am able-bodied, so I am expected to take care of myself and rise up to my gender expectations. As a 20 year-old female I am perceived to be timid or shy, reserved, go out regularly, dress a specific way, wear make up, enjoy shopping, and even cooking. I am also expected to look presentable, even when dressing down, to do well in school, and living in a heteronormative society I am expected to have or be looking for a boyfriend.
