But what is intersectionality and why is it important in regards to family institution? Intersectionality is the study of social categorization that examines the intersecting systems of power based on race, class, gender, nation, ethnicity, sexuality, age, and other markers of diverse identities and how they mutually construct one another. The system of interaction creates a way of thinking about an individual's identity and it relationship to power; it helps you recognize that you can be oppressed and privileged at the same time. It also challenges stereotypes created by dominant forms of ideology. Intersectionality, therefore, allows researchers to deepen their analysis of family diversity and analyzes how family values and rhetoric support
