The inquiry question that I based my interviews around is “what makes my family a family”? This inquiry question is an extension and elaboration of the first grade social studies curriculum unit on families that my school adheres to. I partitioned my students into a high, medium and low group based on reading level and selected one student from each group in order to get a wider range of what my students previously knew about families from all levels. I asked my students seven questions: 1. What is a family? 2. What is the definition of family? 3. What makes your family a family? 4. Who is in your family? 5. For instance, none of my students knew what the definition of the word “definition” was, which made questions regarding the meaning of words hard to analyze. Additionally, students had very unclear understandings of what the word family meant and none knew what the definition of unique was. Many students were able to talk about what a family was, but not give a concrete, operational definition of family – “it’s like when you, how I would say, put them all in a house” and “family is kind of the people you live with” (personal communication, 2016).
