Consequence of False Illusions People tend to forget the negative parts of the past, holding onto the positive and idealizing it to create nostalgia. It is easy to romanticize and live in the past in order to avoid difficulties in the present. The past becomes a false illusion and an enchanted safe haven from the corruption in reality. However, trying to apply false illusions into reality leads to isolation and corruption. F. Scott Fitzgerald’s book, The Great Gatsby, investigates the detrimental effects of craving the false sense of security in the past. Gatsby’s obsession of a false hope and idealization of the past contrasts the Lost Generation’s attempt to find self-fulfillment after war and the American Dream disillusioned them. Gatsby’s feeble attempt to live in a past idealization to escape the corruption in the present traps him in an illusion. He has nostalgia for Daisy’s perfection and the young love they used to share. He over idealizes the past, demonstrated by the reunion with Daisy where yellow is used as an enchanted color. It is most evident when Nick describes “the pale gold odor of kiss-me-at-the-gate” which represents Gatsby’s captivation of another flower: Daisy (90). Pale gold lacks luster, resembling an enchanted past that is fading without Gatsby’s ability to realize it. The inability is because his alter ego, Jay Gatsby, is created through the naive ideas about love as a seventeen-year-old kid and around Daisy’s acceptance by putting “some idea of himself…into loving Daisy” (110). The childhood innocence and imagination James Gatz uses to create his false identity causes an over idealization of the past. Gatsby avoids the reality of living in isolation by feeding off the romantic love with Daisy from his dreams. Gatsby never has a genuine relationship which is a consequence of pursuing the American Dream and also a reason the Lost Generation stopped believing in false hopes. Gatsby represents the many reasons the Lost Generation gave up on America’s past of hope and dreams and began to find self-fulfillment in the present. Unlike Gatsby, they tried to avoid the consequences of pursing a single dream. They were unable to hope for a better future and realized the actual corruption and isolation when the Great Depression occurred. By not living a life of illusions for some future or past, it diminishes optimism but at the same time, improves the lives of the present-of reality.

Nostalgia, the bittersweet longing for things, persons, or situations of the past, is the dominant feeling throughout The Great Gatsby, written by F. Scott Fitzgerald. It is an eloquently written novel filled with intricate details and written to evoke the romanticism in anybody. The love affairs evolving throughout the story add substance as well as emotions to the author’s message, a moral lesson concerning how people think and behave. I found numerous instances in the book that aroused soul-searching questions that every person asks him/herself at one period of time or another. Mr. Jay Gatsby, the self made millionaire, is desperately seeking to reunite with his first and only love, Daisy Buchanan, who is already married to Tom. The story unfolds through the eyes of Mr. Nick Carraway, who lends a moral standing to the story, remains more distant than the other characters, and is more a spectator than being actively or emotionally involved in the situations. Fitzgerald’s use of Carraway as a spectator, and how brilliant it is, is one aspect that all literary critics seem to agree upon. The first literary critic, Jeffrey Steinbrink, primarily focuses his analysis on the element of time. He states, “the notion that the flow of history can be arrested, perhaps even reversed, recurs in The Great Gatsby as a consequence of the universal human capacity for regret and the concomitant tendency to wish for something better” (Steinbrink 179). The inability to recover the past as well as the tendency to try and correct it is most evident with Jay Gatsby.
“ Its attitude is one of disillusionment and detachment; Fitzgerald is still able to evoke the glitter of the 1920s but he is no longer dazzled by it; he sees its underlying emptiness and impoverishment” (Trendell 23)The story is narrated from the point of view of Nick, one of Gatsby’s friends. The problematic and hopeless romantic, Gatsby, sets out to fulfill his dream in acquiring Daisy, his lifelong love, through his many tactics and ideas. Gatsby is introduced extending his arms mysteriously toward a green light in the direction of the water. Later, Gatsby is shown to be the host of many parties for the rich and Nick is invited to one of these parties where Gatsby and Nick meet. When Gatsby later confesses his love for Daisy he explains she was a loved one who was separated from him and hopes to get her again explained when he says, “I hope she'll be a fool -- that's the best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful little fool”(Fitzgerald 56). There are several obstacles that Gatsby must overcome and the biggest one that is Daisy’s current fiancé but that still does not get in the way of him trying to recover Daisy’s old feelings. His attempts are made through money and wealth because he tries to buy her love back instead of letting it happen naturally.
For five years, Gatsby was denied the one thing that he desired more than anything in the world: Daisy. While she was willing to wait for him until after the war, he did not want to return to her a poor man who would, in his eyes, be unworthy of her love. Gatsby did not want to force Daisy to choose between the comfortable lifestyle she was used to and his love. Before he would return to her, he was determined to make something of himself so that Daisy would not lose the affluence that she was accustomed to possessing. His desire for Daisy made Gatsby willing to do whatever was necessary to earn the money that would in turn lead to Daisy’s love, even if it meant participating in actions...
The two were young lovers who were unable to be together because of differences in social status. Gatsby spends his life after Daisy acquiring material wealth and social standing to try and reestablish a place in Daisy’s life. Once Gatsby gains material wealth he moves to the West Egg where the only thing separating he and Daisy is a body of water. It is through the eyes of Nick Carraway, the narrator of the novel, that the reader gains insight into the mysterious Jay Gatsby. In Nick’s description of his first encounter with Gatsby he says, “But I didn't call to him, for he gave a sudden intimation that he was content to be alone—he stretched out his arms toward the dark water in a curious way, and, far as I was from him, I could have sworn he was trembling. Involuntarily I glanced seaward—and distinguished nothing except a single green light, minute and far away, that might have been the end of a dock.” The reader soon discovers that the green light is at the end of Daisy’s dock, signifying Gatsby’s desperation and desire to get her back. Gatsby’s obsessive nature drives him to throw parties in hopes that his belonged love will attend. The parties further reveal the ungrasping mysteriousness of Gatsby that lead to speculations about his past. Although the suspicions are there, Gatsby himself never denies the rumors told about him. In Nick’s examination of Gatsby he says, “He had one of those rare smiles with a quality of eternal reassurance in it, that you may come across four or five times in life. It faced, or seemed to face, the whole external world for an instant and then concentrated on you with an irresistible prejudice in your favor. It understood you just as far as you wanted to be understood, believed in you as you would like to believe in yourself.” This persona Gatsby portrays shows how he is viewed by others, and further signifies his hope and imagination
Even after Gatsby does achieve his dream of prosperity, he is left unsatisfied always wanting something more. “He talked about the past, and I gathered that he wanted to recover something, some idea of himself perhaps, that had gone into loving Daisy” (110). Gatsby remains dissatisfied with what his life has become; instead of attempting to change it, he tries to relive the past through Daisy. In addition, earning his money untruthfully leaves Gatsby with a feeling of discontent since he cannot pride himself in hard work by means of earning it. The material possessions in Gatsby’s life bring him temporary happiness and satisfaction unaware that Daisy will fulfill the void of eternal longing for love. Humanity views material possessions as a symbol of wealth despite the many other ways an individual can be wealthy. This corrupted view reveals why Gatsby could not be content and accept his past as a part of him. In the passage of time, Gatsby continuously strives for his dream unaware that it has already passed, symbolic for the realization that one can’t relive the past. “‘You can’t relive the past.’ ‘Can’t relive the past?’ he cried incredulously. ‘Why of course you can!’” (110). Gatsby’s endeavor for the American dream leads to his downfall. Through his re-invention, his false life, and his love for Daisy he indirectly ruins his real life. His illusion of reality and his love for Daisy ultimately destroys him because his “Belasco set” as a romantic breaks when everything is revealed.
Gatsby made himself from nothing and dedicated his life to achieving his dreams, “If personality is an unbroken series of successful gestures, then there was something gorgeous about him, some heightened sensitivity to the promises of life…. an extraordinary gift for hope…. I have never found in any other person and which it is not likely I shall ever find again”(Fitzgerald,67). It is not what Gatsby did or would be willing to do to achieve his dreams, but the drive and hope he embodied in his fulfillment of those dreams that makes him great, “For Nick, Gatsby 's lies, his pretensions, and his corruption are "no matter"; nor is his failure to win back Daisy; what matters is the sustaining hope and belief in the value of striving for a "wondrous" object, not its inevitable disappearance and meaninglessness”(Will). The fire that drives Gatsby defines him, an individual who would sacrifice his life for his dreams. “Jay Gatsby is the embodiment of the American Dream. He is shown to us with an insecure grasp of social and human values, a lack of cultural intelligence and self-knowledge, a blindness to or unconcern for the pitfalls that surround him”(Pidgeon). The greatest foe of the story is not George Wilson, who kills him, but Gatsby’s own persistence and desire to be accepted as something he will never be,“Old Money”. Gatsby works so hard expecting to be accepted by the Old Money social wealthy class, not knowing due to “lack of cultural intelligence” that it can never be achieved. The greatest hope Gatsby has is that over the five years it took him to build his materialistic legacy is that he could simply “repeat the past” with Daisy. Gatsby’s life is a vivid display of dissatisfaction and he takes extreme measures to create a life that he is happy with. In his earlier years, Gatsby lived on a North Dakota farm before deciding that he wanted to create a better life; he changed his name from Jimmy Gatz to Jay Gatsby and moved to New York, where he believed he could create a wealthy life (98). Gatsby is successful in achieving his goal of wealth, albeit through illegal bootlegging, yet he still feels he is not accomplished without Daisy. The novel The Great Gatsby is a reflection of this decade, it illustrates the burning passion one man has toward his "American Dream" and the different aspects of the dream. Fitzgerald's work is a reflection of America during his lifetime. The Great Gatsby shows the ambition of one man's reach for his "American Dream," the disappointment of losing this dream and the despair of his loss.
The Great Gatsby is a symbolic novel of the disintegration of the American dream in an era of extraordinary prosperity and material excess. On the surface, we see that it is a story about the love between a man and a woman but the overall theme is the collapse of the American dream in society. We find that every character in their own way is searching for their American dream but as a result, their desire for wealth and pleasure, caused them to find themselves lost in the corruption of the aristocrat society.
Gatsby’s obsession of his love for Daisy and wealth prove his dream as unattainable. Throughout the novel, he consumes himself into lies to cheat his way into people’s minds convincing them he is this wealthy and prosperous man. Gatsby tries to win Daisy’s love through his illusion of success and relive the past, but fails to comprehend his mind as too hopeful for something impossible. In the end, Nick is the only one to truly understand Gatsby’s hopeful aspirations he set out for himself but ultimately could not obtain. In the novel, F. Scott Fitzgerald is able to parallel many themes of the roaring twenties to current society. The ideas of high expectations and obsession of the material world are noticeable throughout the history and is evident in many lives of people today.
Throughout the different sources Gatsby uses to attract Daisy, one of them is his luxurious and materialistic spending to gain Daisy’s attention. Gatsby’s materialistic livelihood is for Daisy’s affection, Gatsby tells Nick, “Well, suppose we take a plunge in the swimming-pool? I haven’t made use of it all summer” (82). When Gatsby invites Nick over to his house, Gatsby surprises Nick, and Nick refers to his house as the “World’s Fair”. All of Gatsby’s materialistic possessions are for Daisy’s attention because he wants the unattainable “golden girl” for the idea of what she represents: class and old money. Also Gatsby does not use most of his possessions for his own benefit, but for Daisy’s sake. However, it is ironic how the one time he enjoys his wealth, he dies. Gatsby represents the perfect gentleman because of his reputation in the Jazz Age society, however, his unknown source of money becomes a skeptical inquiry for many. Jordan expresses to Nick, “Well, they say he’s a nephew or a cousin of Kaiser Wilhelm’s. That’s where all his money comes from” (32). Gatsby is unwilling to combine his desires with the moral values of society and instead made his money in underhanded schemes, illegal activities, and by hurting many people to achieve the illusion of his perfect dream.
