To lead a pleasant and long-lasting life a person must find their source of a higher power, the higher power is used for guidance and to form morals along life’s course. As one is growing and their ethics are forming, reason finds its place alongside faith in one’s life. As reason comes to the surface a person must learn how to grasp and understand both concepts to be able to use them in important decisions. In Life of Pi the protagonist, Pi Patel, endures a series of tragic events, but it does not dawn on him that he must be cautious with every decision he makes. Throughout Martel’s novel he shows that both are needed to make critical decisions. Depending on the situation, one needs to ask themselves which is going to lead them into the best direction. An example of this is chapter 54, Pi is devising his plan on how to deal with Richard Parker, which is the envision of himself. He is trying to make the best decisions possible for himself, and he debates within himself about which plan need to be put in action, finally he finds it within him. “A modest glow of hope flickered to life within me, like a candle in the night. I had a plan and it was a good one. I only needed to survive to put it into effect.”(176) Pi is starting to realize that instead of giving up and letting the odds overcome him, he will persevere through the problems. The true meaning behind plans 1-5 are suicide. Pi is hopeless, he lost his family and all of his animals,which was all he ever knew growing up. Pi’s higher power is telling him that he cannot give up even when reason is pushing him toward giving up. This part of the novel is showing that faith and reason are clearly contradicting each other and how Pi chooses to handle the
