Failure In College Essay

There have been many times throughout my life that I have failed at something. According to Merriam-Webster, “failure is a state of inability to perform a normal function”, or, “Inability to succeed.” Merriam-Webster is correct when defining failure, but my definition is a little different. In my own words, it is an obstacle in a person’s life that can either be unchanged and forgotten, or overcome. Failures throughout my life have shaped the person that I am now. In athletics, I don’t take losing well and when I fail I always get discouraged. Losing does not only discourage me, it also gives me more of a competitive edge and makes me strive to get better; in order to avoid failing the next time. I had always played baseball and if I went a game without getting a hit, I would stay at the field and have my dad pitch to me for at least an hour, until I felt better about the failures during the game. The one class that made it this way was, Advanced Placement Chemistry (AP Chemistry). AP Chemistry was a class that I needed to spend many hours studying, in order to get the grade that I wanted. Prior to taking this class, school came very easy for me and studying was not essential in order to get the grades that I had received. After the first month of my Junior year I had failed two tests and had an F in AP Chem. This occurred because I never had to apply myself in the past years of schooling. There were two things at that point that could be done. One thing could have been dropping the class and taking an easier one, or try to overcome the failures throughout the first month and learn how to change the study habits that I had prior to this
