Dystopian literature is a genre of fictional writing used to explore social and political structures in a dark world or setting. Ray Bradbury used this genre in his book “Fahrenheit 451”. Dystopian literature consists of dystopian societies. A dystopian society is an imaginary society that is dehumanizing and unpleasant. The author of “Fahrenheit 451”, Ray Bradbury, used this genre to create his own dystopian society and expressed himself through the words of some of the characters he created and showed his concerns for the future of society. Bradbury created his own dystopian society. He used the main characteristics of dystopian literature to create it. Some characteristics of dystopian societies in dystopian literature are: propaganda is used, the citizens don’t have freedom, a figure or concept is worshipped by the citizens, citizens are under constant surveillance, and the society is an illusion of a perfect utopian world. In a dystopian society, there is so much control. It is usually that a government is controlling society and shaping it to be how they want it to be. His society did not have any vicious villains or dictators. Per my research and knowledge of books with dystopian societies in them, most stories with these societies have villainous dictators. Bradbury’s book does not. It is almost as if the society runs itself. In most dystopian literature, achieving a higher society is the goal. In this book, I really don’t think that was what their goal was. In a way, it was though, because everyone was just so terrified that reading books would cause wars and hardships. But, what they did not realize was that by burning the books, it was preventing the people from educating themselves and in turn made an even bigger
