Currently our society is at the verge of falling off a cliff, leading us straight to eliminating books, as our generation advances. In the book, Fahrenheit 451, books are completely outlawed by the government, which stirs trouble into the society. Ray Bradbury’s dystopian novel, Fahrenheit 451, a futuristic society, has changed in custom, relationships, and education compared to our modern society. Today we have several dystopian novels out, such as; Divergent and The Hunger Games. While we know all the different societies we still have trouble trying to decide which one we believe the most, which one is the most realistic. There is older novels that most people really haven’t even heard of, like Fahrenheit 451. In Divergent and Fahrenheit 451 we were showed both authors visions of our future and how it compares to our modern day. There are so many ways that these two novels are alike, through characters, authors, and the time difference, but I believe that Fahrenheit 451 is a better overall view of our world today.
In Federalist 10 James Madison argued that while factions are inevitable, they might have interests adverse to the rights of other citizens. Madison’s solution was the implementation of a Democratic form of government. He felt that majority rule would not eliminate factions, but it would not allow them to be as powerful as they were. With majority rule this would force all parties affiliate and all social classes from the rich white to the poor minorities to work together and for everyone’s opinion and views to be heard.
In the novel Fahrenheit 451 books are so the government in the society may obtain total control over the people and their way of thinking. Guy Montag is starting to become really affected by the book burning because at the end of The Hearth and the Salamander it is discovered he has hidden books in the ventilator making him very curious as to why someone would die with them like the old lady. A Dystopia is a society where something is flipped from our normal society, making everything else different and worse than we can imagine. Harrison Bergeron is a good example of a dystopia because it changes one thing that makes that society worse than ours. In the society of Fahrenheit 451, reading books is illegal. The book I read was Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. In this book, A firefighter named Guy Montag was living a very happy life burning people’s book and the houses they were hidden in. That is until he met a seventeen year old girl named Clarisse McClellan who opened Montag’s eyes to show him a world he wanted to be in. After Montag and his firemen co- workers went to another house that contained hidden books, he met an elderly lady that was not afraid of their presence. The lady was tortured by the firemen but said these words “Play the man, master Ridley; we shall this day light such a candle by God’s grace in England, as I trust shall never be put out.” The lady refused to leave and was then burnt along with her books. A short while after the incident Montag asked Captain Beatty about the quote the lady said and Captain Beatty said she got the quote from a man named Nicholas Ridley who said this as he was burnt alive at Oxford, for heresy, on October 16,
Knowledge may bring you either disaster or happiness. In Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury and “By the Waters of Babylon” by Stephen Vincent Benet, the main theme is just that. Both main character had a similar journey.While some differences between John and Montag journey to enlightenment apparent, the similarities are impressive. The issues the book readers in Fahrenheit 451 faced are very similar to some of the problems the Thirteen Colonies faced while under the reign of King George III. They were oppressed because of their differences, and the leaders of the times were always trying to intimidate people into resignation to their abuse.
