“You took all the pills in your bottle last night.”
“Oh, I wouldn’t do that.”
“The bottle was empty.”
“I wouldn’t do a thing like that. Why would I do a thing like that?” she said.
1B. This part is significant because it shows how different a hospital in this timeline is like. The hospital alone seems very threatening and the process to save Mildred is very horrific. Sentences that make it feel like this are “Did it drink the darkness? Did it suck out all the poisons accumulated with the years?” Those provide the scene with a very dreadful feel. After that, it seems like Mildred has a new soul implanted into her, and she might not be the same. “The bloodstream in this woman was new and it seemed to have done a new thing on her.” Later, when Montag questions his wife about what happened (quotes above), she doesn’t remember anything that happened. I further wonder if the new blood did something to her, though it may just be that the blood riled up her brain too much.

I can infer that Beatty will find out and come to Montag’s house, burning his books in the process. Montag will be in some serious punishment. Even Mildred was trying to protect him, by saying: “Ladies, once a year, every fireman’s allowed to bring one book home, from the old days, to show his family how silly it was…” However, I think that Mildred is doing this for her own benefit because she might not want her friends to leave, or if she loses Montag, then she has nothing. So, this passage may not be only foreshadowing that Montag will be in big trouble later, but also some facts about Mildred’s personality.

14A. “Go home.” Montag fixed his eyes upon her quietly. “Go home
