Factory Farms Research Paper

Factory farms are large, industrial operations that raise large numbers of animals for food. A substantial amount of farm animals in the United States are raised in factory farms, the factory’s focus on making a profit and making food efficiently at the expense of the animals well being. Individuals have argued that factory farms are inhumane for many reasons. As if animals weren’t enough, the harmful effects of factory farming are far beyond the animals. Though many people don’t realize it our health, the environment, and even our rights are negatively affected by industrial farming. The benefits of leaving the animal products and factory farms behind far outweigh the benefits of burgers and bacon. If we want to live in a cleaner, healthier …show more content…

The gases contain many harmful chemicals and they smell terrible. Also, the animal waste can contaminate the drinking water supplies. For example, the nitrates from the lagoons can seep into the groundwater, which can cause deaths in infants, spontaneous abortions, and can increase the risk of blue baby syndrome. Blue baby syndrome is an illness that begins with large amounts of nitrate ingested into the digestive system then the nitrate reacts with oxyhemoglobin to form metheglobin, which cannot carry oxygen. When talking about the actual food that comes out of industrial farms there can be many health concerns. Poor sanitation and waste management of the animals can lead to contamination of the food supply with bacteria like e.coli and salmonella. Animal products are the primary source of saturated fat in the American diet. Saturated fat has been directly linked to heart disease and obesity. Also, antibiotic resistance stems from the use of antibiotics to promote growth and decrease disease within the farm. The Center for Disease Control estimates that each year two million people in the United Stats contract antibiotic-resistant infections. CDC also confirmed a link between the use of antibiotic in farm animals and the growing problem of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, which is responsible for the deaths of Americans each …show more content…

Methane has more than 20 times the global warming potential of carbon dioxide. Most of the earth’s methane gas comes from Cows. Cattle on factory farms and feedlots are fed low-quality grains, which their bodies were not made to digest, resulting in high levels of indigestion and gas. All that gas has to go somewhere and it goes straight into our atmosphere. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that confined animals generate 3 times more raw waste than humans in the United States. Factory farms waste is stored in manure pits or lagoons and is applied to farm fields as fertilizer. The vast quantities of manure can make their way into the environment where they pollute the air and water. When manure is repeatedly over applied, it runs off the land and comes together as nutrient pollution in waterways. This can cause water quality across the country to be threatened by phosphorus and nitrogen, two nutrients that are present in animal waste. Nitrogen in excessive amounts can decrease the oxygen levels in the water and can lead to destroying the aquatic
