What are factory farms? What do factory farms do that are really that terrible? People may not know this, but factory farms have various effects on many aspects of everyday life. Factory farms are affecting animals, the world’s population, and the environment. These industrialized farms are causing controversy among many groups and many people. Several alternatives to factory farms are available, and would be a much more viable way to farm.
Factory farms are defined as “a system of large-scale industrialized and intensive agriculture that is focused on profit with animals kept indoors and restricted in mobility” (factory farming). Because factory farming is associated with cruel and unfair treatment of animals, and has other negative effects on health and the environment, few people actually support factory farms; however, there are some who believe factory farming is the newest and greatest way to farm.
Since factory farms are the most popular ways to farm, the farming industry is being overrun with them. “…In the U.S. only 3% of farms now generate an astonishing 62% of that nation’s agricultural output” (Farrell). Dominating the farm industry, factory farms are slowly taking over conventional ways of farming. Supporters of the factory farms have many reasons that factory farms are beneficial. “Because factory farms are so large, they achieve ‘economies of scale,’ producing much more food at cheaper prices than smaller farms” (Farrell). Factory farms are able to make more food at a more affordable cost for consumers.
