Controversies exist within science because the world is full of differing perspectives and ideas. One of my favorite children’s movies was Hoodwinked because it told the story of Little Red Riding Hood through the perspectives of every character involved in the plot, so we were able to experience each person’s true motives and individual assessment of what really happened to the stolen baked goods. It’s captivating because the same is true of real life. People bring with them their histories, values, morals, knowledge, and priorities, which all have some influence on the way they see the world and how they handle different situations. On one hand, there are people who believe that there is alien life elsewhere in the universe or that there is the possibility for alien life to exist. On the other hand, there are people who believe that alien life cannot exist and never will. Within these categories, there are more subgroups. Starting with the groups of people who believe aliens can exist are the people who believe the world has already encountered extraterrestrials. A well known theory regarding extraterrestrial existence is the ancient astronaut theory proposed by Erich von Däniken (1968). This theory suggests extraterrestrial beings assisted humans with technological advancements and the creation of various landmarks all over the world thousands of years ago, including the Pyramids of Giza, the Stonehenge, and the Moái Heads of Easter Island (von Däniken, 1968, p. 42). Branching off this theory is the Hypothesis of Creation, which states that humans evolve by genetic mutation, by being either descendants as genetic hybrids of proto-humans and extraterrestrials, who landed on Earth hundreds of thousands of years ago (Burns, 2011). They also believe the majority of creation myths are true, however all Gods, Goddesses, deities, and other primordial beings involved were actually extraterrestrial beings who were seemingly Gods in appearance and power (von Däniken, …show more content…

Many times regular objects have been mistaken for UFOs, such as the famous Roswell encounter when a crashed weather balloon was thought to be the remains of an extraterrestrial spacecraft in Roswell, New Mexico (History.com Staff, 2009).
