Shirley Jackson uses conflict to drive the action in her short story “Charles”. There is Internal conflict in the short story Charles When Laurie’s mom thinks her son is being negatively influenced at school. Person vs Self. The Narrator explains “... When faced with a traumatic experience, one’s true nature reveals itself. The trauma forces those suffering from it to cope. How one copes is directly linked to their personality. Some will push everything away, while others will hold whatever they can close. Both of these coping mechanisms can be observed in the two short stories “The Jilting of Granny Weatherall” by Katherine Anne Porter and “A Rose for Emily” by William Faulkner. In “The Jilting of Granny Weatherall” and “A Rose for Emily,” the two protagonists prominent characteristics distinctly affect the way the protagonists copes when faced with trauma and the outcome of the short stories endings. To begin, Granny Weatherall is a prideful control freak. While, in contrast, Miss Emily is delusional and stubborn.
An individual’s mental well being can greatly affect their character and the way they perceive things. In the novels The Kite Runner and A Separate Peace, the protagonists are boys who are infested by internal conflicts such as insecurities and emotions. In Khaled Hosseini’s The Kite Runner, a boy lets his dad negatively affect his character, causing him to treat those around him in a cynical manner. Likewise, a boy from John Knowles’ A Separate Peace bases his character on whom he wishes to be, letting his unhealthy mental state consume him. Hence, explored through both novels, is how a person’s internal conflicts can lead to their downfall, whether as a result of their struggle with identity or their feelings towards others.
In order to represent that the narrator's pride caused him to act with ill manners towards Doddle, Hurst creates the internal conflict which portrays the narrator’s struggle to choose what is more important, his pride or his brother. As the narrator confessed his past to the reader, he described a memory about how Doodle walked and he announced to the family that the narrator was the one who taught him. The narrator thus responds with: “They did not know that I did it for myself; that pride, whose slave I was, spoke to me louder than all their voices; and that Doodle walked only because I was ashamed of having a crippled brother” (Hurst 419). It is important to note how the author compares the narrator to a “slave” of pride, the word slave connotes that the narrator is imprisoned by pride and creates the appearance that the force is inescapable. Riley changes the genuine story of how war changes people because he understands that a love story gone wrong is more interesting. Modifying the truth for popularity approbation should not be conducted because the truth is then gone. O’Brien modifies his stories’ authenticity to catch reader’s approbation, this causes his stories to lose their honesty. Facts that are altered are no longer facts.
He comes home with stories of a boy named Charles, who is supposedly in his class and has terrible behavior. Some of Charles’s infamous feats are hitting the teacher, yelling in class, and saying bad words. Laurie also starts to exhibit these behaviors at home, and his parents are worried that Charles is a significant influence. As in turns out, after Laurie's mom goes to a PTA meeting, she finds out that there is no such student as Charles and that Laurie is Charles. Jackson plants a handful amount of clues throughout the story to hint the reader that Laurie is making up Charles and that it’s actually him. At the beginning of the story Laurie’s mom thinks,”my sweet-voiced nursery school tot replaced by a long-trousered, swaggering character who forgot to stop at the corner and wave good-bye to me.” This quote shows that Laurie is exhibiting impolite and “I’m just too cool” kind of behavior, similar to Charles behavior. This is foreshadowing because the author hinted the reader that Laurie is lying without actually revealing it.
Throughout the novels we have read this semesters, one can makes observation that many of the characters from each novel have gone through fear whether it was due to racial strife or threat to life. We then see the characters go out and find their salvation or in some cases leave their homes before being faced with the consequences they have brought upon themselves.. Finally, most character are then faced with their fate in life where in most situation it is death or freedom. We see these variations first develop by author Richard Wright 's in his novel and movie Native Son. Humans are never perfect, and their emotions often conflict with their logic. In “The Scarlet Ibis”, the narrator receives a physically disabled brother, Doodle, thus trains Doodle physically so that he could live a normal life. Throughout the story, the narrator’s actions and thoughts reveals his true personalities to the audience as he slowly narrates the story of himself and his scarlet ibis, Doodle, whose existence he dreaded. There are some literary devices or methods that can be applied in analyzing a given story that can either be short or long. Other aspects include literary devices, contrast, repetition, and anomalies (Wallek and Warren, 1956). In this task, I will use the short story, The First Day, which is written by Edward P. Jones. I will provide a summary of the story and later analyze it by identifying the devices used and how they have been applied to bring out the meaning of the story. The story is about a little girl seeing her mother as a flawed woman. The first day of school or the young girl, she found out her mother is not perfect. It’s not easy when you grew up expecting something, but after a while you find out the opposite is completely right.
The Catcher in the Rye, a charming tale of Holden Caulfield, its main character as he finds his way through New York City after once again being expelled from his school. The focus now is at the near end where he enjoys his time with his little sister, Phoebe riding an ordinary carousel within a zoo. In the two stories: “Charles” which was written by Shirley Jackson, an American writer, who’s prominence was in the late 1940’s through the early 60’s and “The Open Window” which was written by H. H. Every day, Laurie comes home and tells his parents about the day’s events, the topic that always comes up is Charles. The way Laurie talks about Charles makes him sound like he is someone who makes a great friend or that he is actually popular among other school children but his parents think that Charles is made up of “toughness and bad grammar” (1). Laurie talks about Charles to the point that it has become a “routine” (2). When children talk about someone very much, it usually means they either admire that person or the complete opposite like a child would go on and on about a superhero. The language he uses to describe Charles to his parents also suggests that he thinks Charles is not a bad influence.
