Exploring Stevenson's Style in the Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde
In this essay I will be looking at how Stevenson’s description of
setting in this novella help us the reader gain a clearer
understanding about the themes and characters and learn more about
them. Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde is the story about a respectable man’s
strange associations with a “damnable young man” Edward Hyde; the hunt
through fog-bound London for a killer; and the final revelation of
Hyde’s true identity makes this story a chilling exploration into the
different natures of man. The main themes explored in this novella are
the beast in man, duality of man and nature, secrecy, hypocrisy,
repression and violence. These themes are mentioned in cryptic form
throughout the story, giving the reader a better image of the horror
and violence that happen in the story. Other themes include horror and
evil, appearance vs. reality and light and dark. They come across
strongly throughout the novella to remind the reader about the
differences in man and how the appearance of someone/something might
not be the reality, i.e. Dr Jekyll appears to be a respectable man in
society at the beginning of the book but the reality of his dark
secrets and strange links with Mr Hyde show otherwise. Jekyll and Hyde
is a dark novella full of repression and violence, horror and evil,
which reveals the dark secrets of split personalities.
At the beginning of the novella, Stevenson describes a bright,
inviting street. The description is full of good comments and putting
the street into the light-“florid charms…street shone out in
contrast…cleanliness and gaiety of note” demonstrate this point. The
happy, bustling street leads the reader to believe that this
description describes some of the characters personalities, good etc.
The atmosphere created by the thriving street is an inviting one,
welcoming anyone to visit. However in contrast to the bright welcoming
street is the “sinister block of building” at the end of the street.

When Hyde was described he was described as small and the facial expression of his was very odd and hard to explain “Mr. Hyde was pale and dwarfish, he gave an impression of deformity without any nameable malformation, he had a displeasing smile, he had borne himself to the lawyer with some sort of murderous mixture of timidity and boldness, and he spoke with a husky, whispering somewhat broken voice” (Stevenson 16). After Utterson’s first encounter with Hyde, he is just amazed and shocked because of Hyde’s physical appearance. Also in their first encounter, the setting was very dark and gloomy which adds to the claim. Also the description of Hyde symbolizes Hyde’s evil. Hyde’s ugliness and his deformed face symbolizes his evil, his small size symbolize Jekyll’s evil side inside him that was repressed for so long along with the dark setting. Another symbolism used in the book is between Jekyll’s laboratory and his house. Jekyll’s house is described as a place of wealth and comfort but his laboratory is described as “a certain sinister block of building thrust forward its gable on the streets” (Stevenson 6). The wealthy house represents the respectable man Jekyll and the laboratory represents the corrupt Hyde. The sense of conflict being created through disapproval portrays duality that the Victorians had at the period; it is almost as if they were in a dilemma and confusion in deciding which element of sanity to maintain. Stevenson wrote the story to articulate his idea of the duality of human nature, sharing the mixture good and evil that lies within every human being. In the novel Mr Hyde represents the evil part of a person and of Dr Jekyll.

Stevenson uses a combination of: horror, supernatural, moral messages, and mysteries. The use of horror captures us because it’s normally shocking and frightening to think about. When you combine that with mystery you get an effect that makes you feel edgy and nervous to read on but you want to read on because if you don’t you’ll never get the answers to your questions. His uses of moral messages is effective in keeping the reader’s interest because it will make the reader question and doubt themselves on things because they might feel more like Hyde than they would like to.
To conclude the way that Stevenson has described Hyde and what Jekyll has done in most parts he has related it to the devil which in Victorian times was considered very dangerous, even though today he’s not considered that powerful it would still make a big impact. Stevenson has been successful in using many elements of a shocker/thriller to write a novella with a much deeper moral significance because every aspect of the story relates back to the Victorian morals of 1837 till 1901 and for a 21st century reader some parts of the novella will make them think what is really happening around them now and whether it is right or not!

When the novella was first published it had caused a lot of public outrage as it clashed with many of the views regarding the duality of the soul and science itself. The audience can relate many of the themes of the story with Stevenson’s personal life. Due to the fact that Stevenson started out as a sick child, moving from hospital to hospital, and continued on that track as an adult, a lot of the medical influence of the story and the fact that Jekyll’s situation was described as an “fateful illness” is most likely due to Stevenson’s unfortunate and diseased-riddled life. Furthermore the author had been known to dabble in various drugs, this again can be linked to Jekyll’s desperate need and desire to give in to his darker side by changing into Mr Hyde.

While Dr. Jekyll is shown to be well-liked by his colleagues, Mr. Hyde is openly disliked by the grand majority of those who encounter him, terrified of his frightful nature and cruel actions. Throughout Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Stevenson portrays the wealthy side of London, including Mr. Utterson and Dr. Jekyll, as respected and well-liked, while showing the impoverish side as either non-existent or cruel.

Stevenson’s most prominent character in the story is the mysterious Mr Hyde. On the other hand, Mr Hyde is described as being ‘hardly human’, ‘pale and dwarfish’, giving of an impression of deformity and ‘so ugly that it brought out the sweat on (Mr Enfield) like running’! Fielding also insists later that the relation between repression and hypocrisy is one theme of this novel that cannot be overlooked. This opinion can be approved of a truth after reading the novel. Repression and hypocrisy run through the whole story which reflect on descriptions of every character.
