I love Puerto Rico. It has beautiful cliffs, beaches and, forests. However it can be crazy sometimes. My trip to Puerto Rico took a turn I didn’t expect. My sister moved to Puerto Rico a year earlier, so we decided to visit her. We arrived in Aguada, PR at 2am, and went to my sister's house. We later called it the oven, due to the extremely high temperature during the day. When we got there we immediately went to bed it was 2am after all. When I woke up it was already 80 degrees and it was only 7am. This is because her rental was made entirely of cement so it heated up very swiftly. The history of Puerto Rico under Spanish rule is one of European exploitation of non white peoples for the purpose of economic gain. The ‘discovery’ made by Columbus in 1492 had a great impact on the highly competitive countries in Europe who saw, in lands like Puerto Rico, the possibility of prosperity and advancement. More than hoping to spread their influence or religion, Europeans wanted to take advantage of the lands and resources which seemed unused. Actually the lands were being used quite successfully, but in unfamiliar ways which did not concern many Europeans. With little regard for the native people, Europe began conquering the eastern hemisphere in the name of colonization. Areas which had only known one race for centuries were flooded with people from all over the world seeking money and status. As the stakes grew, and select people and countries heavily prospered off their colonies, ethical and moral restraint declined. The result was a world filled with a diverse group of races, extreme distinctions in class differences, and mixing of culture. This was the case for Puerto Rico, which was just as much affected by colonialism as other areas, but has certain qualities which make the Puerto Rican identity unique.
Puerto Rico better known as “Rich Port” is 1,000 miles (1,600 kilometers). It sits off the coast of southern Florida. It surrounds some of the deepest waters in the entire Atlantic Ocean. Also it is a part of the Greater Antilles. Puerto Rico is composed of year-round mild climate, and has many white, sandy beaches and extraordinary hotels. Puerto Rico is made up of four main land regions: the coastal lowlands, the coastal valleys, the foothills, and the central mountains. The largest city and capital is San Juan, which is located in the lowlands. Furthermore most of Puerto Rico’s crops such as sugar cane, coconuts, and other tropical fruits are grown in the coastal valleys. Pineapples, bananas, and other tropical fruits flourish in the hot, moist climate and are sold in every marketplace. Puerto Rico is a wonderful island fill with much history, culture, tradition and different foods.
Puerto Rico has developed a unique lifestyle over the years that they can call their own. Through combining culture lifestyle of other countries, Puerto Rico has initiated practices that they can claim. Puerto Rico and Puerto Ricans have long been too little understood by Americans. Because they are a territory of the United States, and not a state, Puerto Ricans have used this independence to remain ethnically diversified and unique3.
The world is filled with many gorgeous lands, but Puerto Rico absolutely tops them all. This land is particularly intriguing due to its vast variety of beaches filled with people of all different ethnicities as if it were a melting pot. When experiencing these beaches the senses are overwhelmed with the smell of fresh salt water, foods ranging from fruits that are both sweet and tangy like candy. As soon as person steps on to one of these beaches, he or she can instantly hear people splashing and playing as if he or she were kids in a swimming pool during the summer. Whiles music playing the sounds of the island a music that is infectious and made your body want to succumb to the sounds of the all while the sun warms the air around them like a heater in the winter.
The island’s "commonwealth" status allows for Puerto Rico to be assisted by the U.S. in the attempt for economic transformation and industrialization. However the status also allows the U.S. to reap the benefits for the success of the massive amounts of investment that Puerto Rico has attracted.

For the last extra credit opportunity, I attended the lecture titled, “What is Puerto Rico?” It was an interesting lecture, ran by Gerardo Herrero. He was a very interesting lecturer who kept your attention and was very animated in his delivery. There are two criticisms I have of this lecture, and the first one being the technical difficulties that stalled the lecture. He attempted to have an interactive poll-type thing where people would access an app on their phones and give their input. However, this proved to have numerous problems throughout the lecture. The second criticism I had was that he talked a lot about debt; he also used terms that I didn’t completely understand.
