DISCUSSION ON TEACHING METHODS
Introduction
Teaching Methods can be categorised in to basically two groups which are Teacher Centred and Learner Centred methods, and can take the form of Experiential, Trainer Guided, Cooperative, Interactive Instruction and independent study. However in this task three will be discussed which are Experiential Learning, Cooperative and Trainer Guided Methods in terms of key elements, classroom arrangements, roles, rules as well as considering the pros and cons of each method. COOPERATIVE LEARNING
Cooperative learning has been discussed by Kagan & Spencer, (1994) as teaching strategy in which small teams, each with students of different levels of ability, use a variety of learning activities to improve their understanding of a subject. The World Education Inc. (2009) said it refers to teaching practices that provide opportunities to students to learn together in small groups. This means that students work together to accomplish learning outcomes, therefore this is a collaborative effort or social approach to learning. The instructor assumes the role of facilitator and is guided by a number of steps crucial to experiential learning as noted by Wurdinger & Carlson, (2010) “The teacher should be willing to accept a less teacher-centric role in the classroom, identify an experience in which students will find interest and be personally committed, explain the purpose of the experiential learning situation to the students. In addition the Northern Illinois University,(2011) also noted that the instructor should provide relevant and meaningful resources to help students succeed.
