If one person was to be presented with an option to live a good life, would they take it? They would likely participate in an experience machine that will simulate a person’s every desired event so that they can live a life of maximum pleasure inside the simulation. However, a life attached to an experience machine, leading a simulated life, is not the best life. Inside the machine you forgo many aspects to a good life, such as satisfaction from completing one’s goals. To live a good life, one must satisfy their own desires by achieving them and receiving the satisfaction of the accomplishment and experience. The person who views using the experience machine would lead to the best life, values pleasure as the only method to living a good life. There are harmful methods of achieving your desires, one of them being addiction. When a desire is satisfied through an addiction, there are negative consequences to them. Through drug abuse, you sacrifice your mental state and your body in order to achieve your desires. A person who lives with an addiction and satisfies it as a means of meeting their desires is not truly living a good life. The person may sacrifice their family, work, and social aspects to meet their addiction. While they are satisfying their desire, it is clearly not a good way to live, nor is it the best life. This shows that it is not necessarily true that any action that satisfies a person’s desire always results in one living a good life. A view from a third perspective, one would say they are living a bad life. The third person would have additional perspective regarding the addict’s situation and know of different actions that would likely result in gaining satisfaction in a more healthy
