My ancestors came from Ireland to Massachusetts. They lived in town near Manchester, called Beverly. My great-great-grand father worked in a factory, while my great-great-grand mother was a stay at home mom and housewife. Like most immigrants, they came for the freedom and opportunity that the United Stated provided. There was a heavy job demand in the United States because of the expanding factories and industrialization, which is perfect because immigrants needed work. Coming to North America allowed my ancestors to work to provide for their family and support themselves. A hard working man is a great asset to any work community, so he was privileged in that sense. However, I do believe that they had the short end of the stick in terms of multiculturalism. Because they came for work, they had to assimilate to the North American lifestyle, but as an immigrant. When being hired, immigrants had lower wages because the factories knew that immigrants were desperate for work and would work for next to nothing.
After the immigration generation, my grandfather became an owner of his own car dealership, and my grandmother worked in a shoe shop. America is known as “the greatest country in the world” because of the freedom and opportunity. Immigration allows for more and more people to be able to experience this and make a living, start over and create a new life, or start a family in a safe place. To promote equality and justice for everyone in the United States, we have to push out all of our pre-conceived notions and prejudices. By setting a good example of treating everyone with the respect that they deserve, it can become an accustomed thing.
