In the story, “The Cask of Amontillado” by Edgar Allan Poe, there are many conflicts that build tension for either the reader or the characters in the story. Suspense can change the mood of the reader based on what is happening throughout the plot of the story. The setting of a story could be an example of why a story builds tension. Conflicts build suspense in a story because they make the story more engaging and the characters more dynamic. Montresor is one of the two characters dynamic characters in the story. Montessor is insulted by Fortunato’s opinions about him. As Montresor gets fed up with Fortunato’s comments Montresor seeks revenge. “The thousand of injuries of Fortunato I had borne as best I could; but when he ventured upon insult, I vowed revenge” (114). This develops suspense for Fortunato because he is clueless of what’s coming. Throughout the planning of revenge he decides there is a specific way he should punish him. “I must not only punish, but punish with impunity” (114). While Montresor is leading Fortunato to his death trap he thinks he is being taken to a vault with amontillado inside. “‘Come, let us go.’ ‘Whither?’ ‘To your vaults’”(116). Fortunato falls into the trap which he is still dumb minded about, which grows suspense for the reader because they know what is really happening. Montresor forces Fortunato to drink wine resulting him in becoming drunk and even more clueless. “‘Drink,’ i said, presenting him the wine” (117). Fortunato getting drunk build tension because it makes him even more unaware of what he's doing and wheres he's going.
