How is Peter Van Pels an example of survival during the Holocaust? How does he show survival? Between five to six million jews died during the Holocaust. In the Holocaust, Peter is an example of survival because he survived many things like the selection, when he had to join the so-called “death march”, and when Mouschi got lost. One key point of survival is when Peter survives the selection. When Peter arrived at Auschwitz they would separate you into groups and some would be chosen to work or you would be sent directly to the line of prisoners for death. They would send women with children to the gas chambers. They would also send elderly people. Peter got picked to work as camp post office so he took advantage and would sneak extra food.

In Night, Elie Wiesel, the author, recalls his horrifying journey through Auschwitz in the concentration camp. This memoir is based off of Elie’s first-hand experience in the camp as a fifteen year old boy from Sighet survives and lives to tell his story. The theme of this memoir is man's inhumanity to man. The cruel events that occurred to Elie and others during the Holocaust turned families and others against each other as they struggled to survive Hitler's and the Nazi Army’s inhumane treatment.
Night by Elie Wiesel and First They Came for the Jew by Martin Niemoller both show two perspectives of people throughout the Holocaust. The poem by Niemoller is about him staying silent to survive because the people they were coming for where not his people he shows this by saying “I did not speak out because I was not a Jew.” The book by Wiesel talks about just staying alive because he knew his chances of living were not great but pushing through as he says in this quote “I could have gathered all my strength to break rank and throw myself into the barbed wire.” As stated in both quotes both Night and First They Came for the Jews share the theme of survival. Even though what they had to do to survive is different Niemoller has to stay quiet to survive, but Wiesel has to do much more then just stay silent even though he must do that too.
While obtaining food seemed to be the entire purpose of life for the people imprisoned in the camps, it often killed more people than it saved. Though focusing on food seemed like a logical thing to do when you are being starved, it was not always very effective in helping people survive. There are many situations in the book illustrating how living for the sole purpose of acquiring food—under any condition—could turn out to be lethal.
In Primo Levi’s Survival In Auschwitz, an autobiographical account of the author’s holocaust experience, the concept of home takes on various forms and meanings. Levi writes about his experience as an Italian Jew in the holocaust. We learn about his journey to Auschwitz, his captivity and ultimate return home. This paper explores the idea of home throughout the work. As a concept, it symbolizes the past, future and a part of Levi’s identity. I also respond to the concept of home in Survival In Auschwitz by comparing it to my own idea and what home means to me – a place of stability and reflection that remains a constant in my changing life.

Who’s been exposed to the most depraved aspects of human nature but still manages to find love, to believe in God, to experience joy.” This was a quote said by Oprah Winfrey during her interview with Elie Wiesel, a holocaust survivor. No person who has not experienced the Holocaust and all its horrors could ever relate to Elie Wiesel. He endured massive amounts of torture, physically, mentally, and emotionally just because he was a Jew. One simple aspect of Wiesel’s life he neither chose or could changed shaped his life. It is important to take a look at Wiesel’s life to see the pain that he went through and try to understand the experiences that happened in his life. Elie Wiesel is a well respected, influential figure with an astonishing life story. Although Elie Wiesel had undergone some of the harshest experiences possible, he was still a man able to enjoy life after the Holocaust.
Some of the most fabled stories of our time come from individuals overcoming impossible odds and surviving horrific situations. This is prevalent throughout the Holocaust. People are fascinated with this event in history because the survivors had to overcome immense odds. One, of many, of the more famous story about the Holocaust is Night by Elie Wiesel. Through this medium, Wiesel still manages to capture the horrors of the camps, despite the reader already knowing the story. In addition to him having to overcome difficult odds in order to survive for himself, he also had to care for his weakening father. Primo Levi, in his novel Survival in Auschwitz (2008), illustrates the atrocities inflicted upon the prisoners of the concentration camp by the Schutzstaffel, through dehumanization. Levi describes “the denial of humanness” constantly forced upon the prisoners through similes, metaphors, and imagery of animalistic and mechanistic dehumanization (“Dehumanization”). He makes his readers aware of the cruel reality in the concentration camp in order to help them examine the psychological effects dehumanization has not only on those dehumanized, but also on those who dehumanize. He establishes an earnest and reflective tone with his audience yearning to grasp the reality of genocide.
The theme of Night is resilience. To be resilient is to be strong and able to bounce back when things happen. Elie shows resilience many times throughout the course of Night, and some of these times included when Elie and his block are being forced to run to the new camp, when somebody attempts to kill him and when he loses his father to sickness. When Elie is with the group of people running to the new camp, he knows that he needs to persevere and be resilient, even when the person that he is talking to gives up (Wiesel 86). Elie tries to tell somebody that they need to keep going, and that it will not be much longer, but when they give up, Elie does not seem to pity the boy, and he stays strong. The holocaust, one of the most horrifying times in the world for Jews. In the novel Night by Elie Wiesel, he talks about his terrifying experience in a destruction of murderers. A thirteen years old boy, Elie Wiesel, got trapped in a world of hell. A place called Auschwitz, were all Jew’s freedom were controlled by the Germans. He watches the ghastly view of innocence people and his family member die. Where every little time they have is to survive and hope for a better tomorrow. At numerous moments in the novel, the Jews are victimized when forced to wear the yellow star, beaten harshly with an officer’s baton, and march in the cold winter in order to live.
The Silber Medal winning biography, “Surviving Hitler," written by Andrea Warren paints picture of life for teenagers during the Holocaust, mainly by telling the story of Jack Mandelbaum. Avoiding the use of historical analysis, Warren, along with Mandelbaum’s experiences, explains how Jack, along with a few other Jewish and non-Jewish people survived.
The holocaust was a tragical point in history. About six million Jews were slaughtered for no reason at all. Many innocent women, men, and children were killed by the dozens everyday. They were taken from their homes and sent to concentration camps and ghettos. In the concentration camps they were either put to work or killed. Survival was not in everybody’s hands. They had to rise above and do everything they can to survive. There were many who survived, who still stand today telling their stories. Elie Wiesel’s book Night, was a first hand account of the holocaust. In his book he talks about he experience during the holocaust. For most people, survival is just a matter of putting food on the table, making sure that the house payment is in on time, and remembering to put on that big winter coat. Prisoners in the holocaust did not have to worry about such things. Their food, cloths, and shelter were all provided for them. Unfortunately, there was never enough food, never sufficient shelter, and the cloths were never good enough. The methods of survival portrayed in the novels Maus by Art Spieglmen and Night by Elie Wiesel are distinctly different, but undeniably similar.
This book left me with a deeper sense of the horrors experienced by the Polish people, especially the Jews and the gypsies, at the hands of the Germans, while illustrating the combination of hope and incredible resilience that kept them going.
