In today’s world, stereotypes, inequality, and intolerance are very serious issues. Imagine this--gangs emerge in high schools, students of different races never talk to each other, and schools discriminate against students only because of their background or grades. What would this situation be like? The movie Freedom Writers vividly showed these circumstances. This movie is taken place in 1994, and the majority parts of the story are nonfictions. Director Richard LaGravenese has successfully narrated a story about a teacher who is trying to change racism. Freedom Writers shows that a caring teacher and shared experiences can change stereotypes, inequality, and intolerance. First of all, in Freedom Writers, the high school student stereotypes’ issue is very serious. The only white kid in Mrs. Gruwell’s classroom has been isolated. The reason why this happened is because all the other kids think whites are arrogant. On the other hand, Ben, the white kid, thinks races other than white are all members of gangs and are not educated. The students in Mrs.Gruwell’s class cannot receive the same quality of education as other classes. The only reason to this is that their grade is very bad. After aware this, Mrs.Gruwell begin to try to persuade her supervisor, Mrs.Campbell, to give these students more resources. To her frustration, Mrs.Campbell refuses her request immediately, and she says that these students are not worthy of having good quality of education. Mrs.Gruwell’s caring heart has finally found a way. She begins to engage many part-time jobs in order to pay for her students. It is also because of this, her husband leaves her.
