Phoebe: an example that maturity doesn’t necessarily correlate to age. She was a voice of reason in Holden’s life, encouraging his growing up, whilst still being a symbol of stability amidst his chaos. Jane Gallagher: Jane is someone Holden thinks he can connect to. You can see Holden’s heart when he becomes defensive over Jane and what is right. Jane has an interesting, creepy to say the least, relationship with her stepfather, and as a result Holden seems to be protective of her. Sexual abuse is hinted at in a few places, which may be why Holden was confused by Mr. Antolini’s affection. Sex and sexual misconduct are very gray areas for Holden, and thus his response is to become defensive and protective. Allie: Allie was something he never fully got closure on. Throughout the novel it can be observed that Holden never quite let’s Allie lay to rest. Most of Holden’s actions and/ or other people’s are compared or related to Allie and his memory in some way. Antolini: Mr. Antolini represents Holden’s future. He is a mentor-like figure in Holden’s life. Mr. Antolini reasons with Allie that he needs to find a noble purpose to live for, not an unworthy one to die for. Mr. Antolini is one of the few characters in the novel that show Holden what proper affection and relationship looks like, ignoring the awkward head petting situation of course. James Castle: The boy who was forced to jumped to his death. James Castle’s death represents all that is wrong with society. Holden mentions how awful the people are at the schools, hinting to the James Castle incident. Holden is disgusted to be apart of a society that pardons and sweeps behavior like this under the rug.
