Many people believe that the American Dream is living like a king. It’s every American’s benediction. The Great Gatsby is a tragic love story on the surface, but it’s most commonly understood as a pessimistic critique of the American Dream. The reality is that not everyone can be rich. In the book The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Gatsby is a perfect example of an American dreamer. He came from nothing and got right up to the doorstep to his dream. Gatsby tries to recreate the past by setting himself up with his “golden girl”; Daisy. However, he fails to do so because of Daisy’s perplexed emotions towards Tom, her husband. Despite Gatsby’s love for her, Daisy didn’t know who she loved and she was reserved and privy about who she told. Although it appeared that Gatsby was winning the battle for Daisy, he ended up losing it to Tom. “‘Oh, you want to much!” she cried to Gatsby. “I love you now- isn’t that enough? I can’t help what’s past.” She began to sob helplessly. ”I did love him once- but I love you too”’(Fitzgerald 132).
