In 1984, lies, myths and false information controls the thinking of the citizens. The Party uses propaganda as the deadliest weapon of control. Propaganda increases the citizens’ morale and makes them think that what the party tells them to do is always right. All actions are monitored. No stones are left unturned. Punishment to those who do not oblige by the rules. As we follow the story of our main character Winston, we begin to touch upon the theme of Loyalty, and how it plays a role within this society. The Party in 1984 seeks to ensure that the only and ultimate loyalty its members have will be loyalty for the Party. They eliminate all potential private loyalties. This is its most powerful tool they party has to establish control. In 1984, Orwell portrays the perfect totalitarian society, the most extreme realization imaginable of a modern-day government with absolute power. By touching upon the theme of loyalty, Orwell becomes free to explore this idea thought the eyes of Winston by creating a story where loyalty becomes this the essential key piece to the power of the party. “He was already dead, he reflected. It seemed to him that it was only now, when he had begun to be able to formulate his thoughts, that he had taken the decisive step. The consequences of every act are included in the act itself. “When his father disappeared, his mother did not show any surprise or any violent grief, but a sudden change came over her. She seemed to have become completely spiritless. It was evident even to Winston that she was waiting for something that she knew must happen” (2.7.9). Winston tells the tale of his mother’s depression over his father’s disappearance as an example of loyalty severed by the Party. She didn't go be with any other men after his disappearance. She remained loyal to him. Along with the fact that cheating is a huge law breaking rule that a person could be severely punished for. In that sense, because she remained loyal to Winston’s father, she also remained loyal to the party. What becomes so interesting about this event is that this is Winston mother. You would believe that since this event happened while Winston was a child, he’d take after the influence of his mother. He is clearly aware that his mother did not engage with any new men, however knowing that she did remain loyal he chose his own path by deciding to take his loyalties elsewhere, Ie. the Brotherhood. This connects back to the theme of loyalty in Winston's current time because it relates to how he is at a turning point in his life where he is choosing for himself who he is loyal
