In 1939, the movie The Wizard of Oz made its debut in the United States. Based off the 1900 novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum, the movie displays the mystical adventure of a young girl, Dorothy Gale. Beginning in Kansas on Dorothy’s aunt and uncle’s farm, the film focuses around Dorothy and her monotonous life. Shortly into the movie, Dorothy and her dog, Toto, are swept away by a twister and dropped off in the magical Land of Oz. Here she meets the Good Witch of the North, Glinda. She tells Dorothy to follow the Yellow Brick Road and find the Wizard, who can grant Dorothy her wish of returning to Kansas. Along her path to the Emerald City, where the Wizard of Oz lives, she encounters the Scarecrow, Tin Man, and Cowardly Lion. …show more content…

Along the Yellow Brick Road, she meets the Scarecrow, Tin Man, and Cowardly Lion. Each is searching for something to complete their quest for illumination, a brain; a heart; and courage, respectively. In occult symbolism, Mystery Schools teach students that one must rely on oneself to obtain salvation. Given this, the Scarecrow, Tin Man, Cowardly Lion, and even Dorothy, must rely on themselves to find what they desire. At the end of the movie, Dorothy defeats the Wicked Witch of the West, attaining illumination. Waking from her deep sleep at home, she has successfully combined her physical and spiritual life. Frank Baum accurately presented ideas of occult symbolism in The Wizard of Oz, through aspects of illumination, enlightenment, and self-realization. This was accomplished by depicting multiple characters’ desires and needs, and others as guides to enlightenment. Baum would agree with the quote above, saying that The Wizard of Oz does focus on occult symbolism, and a journey to self-understanding. Everything one has experienced in life leads to self-realization and further, wisdom.
