Misogyny in Pride and Prejudice
Throughout history, men have disrespected, mistreated, and abused women either physically, mentally, or emotionally. And even throughout all of the movements in history to help stop this discriminatory act towards women, misogyny is still present to this day. But one women, through her writing, was able to inform people about how misogyny affects a women’s life. In the novel Pride and Prejudice, by Jane Austen, her only goal throughout the entire story is to reveal this disrespect towards women through its characters, and through its social environment, in hopes to show to her audience that misogyny only limits a women’s true capability and potential in this world. Through character interactions within the book, it is evident that women are seen as the inferior amongst their society. It is evident that the books social environment is primarily dominated by males. One example of how their society is male dominated is through the inheritance of fortune, or the passing down of family real estate. In the book, when Mr. Wickham received the inheritance money instead of Mr. Darcy, the two characters came into conflict with each other. This part of the book represents misogyny in that not once was Mr. Darcy’s sister mentioned in the inheritance of the fortune. This therefore shows how misogyny comes into play about how the family’s wealth is spent, and who gets to receive such wealth. Because women are not included in this process, this show that their society is very misogynistic in that they believe that women would not know how to handle the family money, and that they should not be trusted with it. Other instances in the book also show this misogynistic element of society.
