The Epic poem Beowulf is an Anglo-Saxon Epic poetry piece. Which means that the character Beowulf being the hero of this epic poem Beowulf must include these traits to him loyalty, courageous, unselfishness, and a sense of justice. Three traits I will talk about in this essay are how Beowulf shows loyalty to his king for his approval, he shows courageousness by accomplishing brave task he is sent to do, and he shows justice by killing the evil. We see these traits first come up when our hero Beowulf battles the pure evil creature Grendel in this first half of the poem.

Beowulf's characteristics as an Anglo-Saxon hero of showing loyalty are in this epic poetry more often than not. Loyalty is shown throughout this epic poem Beowulf because it is the noble knight thing to do. Beowulf shows loyalty to more than one person throughout his tale but the most common one would be his king because that is the Anglo-Saxon thing to do is love and honor your king because without him you are nothing and lost. He shows justices throughout this epic poem Beowulf by fighting for good and slaying the evil and he would fight for his king and his people. Beowulf shows he is justice by killing the purely evil Grendel this shows justice within this epic poem. Justice is killing evil which is shown when he says “Beowulf, A prince of the Geats, had killed Grendel, Ended the grief,the sorrow, the suffering Forced on Hrothgar's helpless people By a bloodthirsty fiend”(403-407 translated by Burton Raffel). This shows justice because he killed the evil Grendel and killing evil is how he shows justice. He also shows all of his other Anglo-Saxon traits in this part of the epic poem Beowulf like how he is courgettes by defeating the evil Grendel also shows how he is loyal to his king by ending the grief and suffering on him and finally by killing the evil there is
