Examples Of Irony In The Monkey's Paw

231 Words1 Page

A great example of an ironic work of literature would be the poem “The Monkey's Paw” by Edgar Allan Poe. The multi-vocal nature of irony in this literary piece is tragic and wry. Edgar Allan Poe made this literary piece a tragic irony because of how he twisted the plot, used foreshadowing, imagery, and how he made a disastrous turn of events. For instance, the first irony found was when Herbert White was telling his father to wish for 300 pounds of money. Unknowingly the following day, a man goes to the White family’s house to tell them his son was caught in the machinery and died, but as a gratitude for his hard work, they were awarded 300 pounds. It certainly gave the reader questions like was this coincidence? And whose fault was this?
