This book has a lot of tones to it but the ones that stood out a lot were irony and enduring . The first tone I chose was irony because the book has a little bit of ironic statements like “ …. Larissa’s life elsewhere would be quiet and serene as befit the old.. . This is irony because she is given the chance to die and irony is like sarcasm . I also think this book has a little bit of enduring to it because Joan’s sees something in his vision and goes to the top of the hill to get a sled and is trying is hardest to reach the top and he doesn't give up and that’s what enduring means showing braveness and never giving up.
Readers develop a compassionate emotion toward the characters, although the characters are detached and impersonal, due to the tone of The Road. The characters are unidentified, generalizing the experience and making it relatable – meaning similar instances can happen to anyone, not just the characters in the novel. McCarthy combined the brutality of the post-apocalyptic world with tender love between father and son through tone.
The final passage possesses symbols which represent freedom and terror. The tone of this passage is one of personal closure for the protagonist. The is an emphasis upon voices throughout this passage, especially with the presence of the voices of her father and sister. It is hard to tell if the protagonist felt any true regret as she sank. It seems more like she is relieved. It is also possible that she felt as though no one could possibly understand her. There is an emphasis upon with masculinity and femininity in this passage. The “spurs of the calvary officer” clanging across the porch symbolize the strong masculine presence in the novel. It is possible that this strong masculine presence was what oppressed the protagonist, driving her to suicide. Directly after the strong masculine line is a very feminine one, “There was the hum of bees, and the musky odor of pinks filled the air”.

In Rosemary’s Baby directed by Roman Polanski there are a lot of parallels when it comes to the bible and what it is happens to the characters in the film. Mia Farrow’s (Rosemary) wardrobe illustrates idea innocence. The clothing that Rosemary wears primarily baby doll dresses and Mary Janes mimic that of a toddler. Children are seen as being innocent and un-touched from the harsh realities of the world. Rosemary in the beginning of the film up until she gets practically raped by Satan is “un-touched” from the realities of this cult. To add to irony in her birthing Satan’s spawn she grew up very religious and with nuns from what is seen in her dreams/flashbacks. Rosemary’s character in the film is a parallel with the Virgin Mary (although Rosemary is not a virgin) in that she is having Satan’s child (much like Mary had Jesus).

The author's message of using irony is to show that brute force is not the way to go it better to be clever in complicated situation. Dramatic irony is when there is a contradiction between what a character thinks and what the reader or audience knows to be true.
