The Hobbit Essay: Identity Identity. It is an integral part of defining the person who we are, and is shaped by your experiences and the people you meet along the way, beginning at birth, ending at death. Identity is something that cannot be taken away, nor can it be bought; however it can be influenced or changed by others in a person’s life. That change can have either a positive or negative effect on the individual. Despite the fact in life that some experiences originally seem rather negative, they may benefit your character; identity, in a way you may have not seen during your experience. In The Hobbit, the story follows the epic quest of the Company of the Dwarves, where they are faced with many difficult situations, with their decisions being greatly reflected on the character’s disposition. As a fact, Thorin, the proud, imperious, leader of the Company of the Dwarves has royal heritage, as his grandfather Thror, was the King under the Mountain. Thorin is of royalty, despite not having to do anything to earn his position. Bilbo meanwhile, represents your average, comfort-loving, routine-following, hobbit. “Poor little Bilbo was very nearly left behind again! He just managed to catch hold of Dori's legs, as Dori was borne off last of all; and they went together above the tumult and the burning, Bilbo swinging in the air with his arms nearly breaking Bilbo swinging in the air with his arms nearly breaking” (125). Early on, Bilbo’s anti-hero personality reflects greatly on his Baggins side of the family, as opposed to his adventurous Took side. As the story progresses, he emerges as the true hero and protagonist of the story, following his finding of Gollum’s ring. Also, Bilbo’s reputation and how the other dwarves perceived of him improved, showing his resourcefulness and courage to the others.
