What does it mean to be a hero? A common theme in the book " The Outsiders" is giving everyone the title of a "hero." There is a lot of disagreement on whether the characters could be considered heroes. For example, are Johnny’s actions on the night of Bob’s death justified by Ponyboy being in danger? Were Johnny and Ponyboy driven by pure heroism when seeing the burning church? Or was it just damage control for their previous actions in the park?

The setting of the Outsiders is the poor part of a city. With greasers, hoods, and gangs, you wouldn’t think that this kind of setting would have heroes. But, somehow, Ponyboy Curtis fits that description. First of all, on page 77, he seems intelligent when he recites a poem by Robert Frost, shattering
