There are many reasons why Gandalf is an obvious hero in “The Hobbit”. Without Gandalf the journey would have never happened. Gandalf is always there when he is most needed. Gandalf also tries to keep the peace before fighting. Gandalf is a true hero for many reason’s.
Gandalf is the mastermind behind the journey. If he was not there, there would be no journey. Even if the journey still happened it wouldn't be successful. Gandalf has the map and the key, also he brought the dwarves to bilbo. Gandalf gave the dwarves the map and key. Which they needed to have to able to get into the mountain without going through the main entrance. Also if he did not bring them to bilbo, the countless time that the Dwarves were saved by bilbo, they just wouldn't happen.
Gandalf appears at the right time when he is needed most. Many times when the group was in trouble, Gandalf would appear and would end up saving them. When they were in the goblin caves, Gandalf appeared and freed the dwarves and bilbo, and they were then able to kill the goblin king and escape. Gandalf appeared, when the dwarves were in the goblin cave, surrounded and about to be killed. This is amazing proof the Gandalf is a true hero in “The Hobbit”.

Gandalf is always there trying to keep the peace between groups of people that dislike each other. Beorn doesn't like the dwarves but gandalf tells him the story about, them killing the goblin king and he begins to like them. The humans dislike the dwarves because the they want there promised gold, but the dwarves do not want to pay. Right when they are ready to fight it out, Gandalf appears and tries to get them to peacefully negotiate it. Many showed up in groups of three or four, so that Bilbo couldn’t just turn them all down. They later asked him to come on their adventure with them. The dwarves had told Bilbo about their treasure that was stolen and Bilbo suggested that they go to Lonely Mountain to reclaim it. Bilbo really doesn't want to but feels forced to go. They left a piece of Bilbo's notebook paper on his mantle under a clock showing all the dangers he might encounter. Gandalf had come to tell him that he was going to be late if he did not leave soon to be with the dwarves, causing him to feel forced to go. In the movie, however, Bilbo Baggins is presented with a contract from the others involving his burglar services that he will use on the journey with them. He grabs a backpack before he runs out to catch up with the others. This makes the movie more realistic because no normal person would go on an adventure without grabbing anything for the long journey ahead. Bilbo now had a few items from his hobbit hole that would remind him of his home. The book shows Bilbo as more of a reluctant hero. In the book, Bilbo finds the letter on the mantle and decides to go at the last minute. Every hero goes through certain stages in their valorous journey. Some stages are more important in a hero’s journey compared to others. In The Hobbit, the most important stage of the hero’s journey is stage 6, tests/challenges. This is because the hero, Bilbo (a friendly hobbit), learns how to make decisions based on his mistakes and work individually, he learns new tactics and strategies and he earns possessions and answers after accomplishing them. Bilbo learns to make his own decisions when he sees trolls ahead in their way and he must decide whether to warn the dwarves or steal from the trolls. Then one day a wizard by the name of Gandalf comes and gives Bilbo the opportunity to go on an adventure. Bilbo turns his offer down, but the next day thirteen dwarves come to his house. They have meals together and they sleep at Bilbo’s house. Gandalf then convinces him to go on an adventure with them. Bilbo is many things, in the beginning he is flat, static, main, and he is the protagonist.

Bilbo is also the reason why the dwarves are still alive. Bilbo saves the dwarves from many different disasters. The disasters range from the spiders to Smaug. Just before he leaves, Gandalf asks Bilbo for his ring. Due to the power in which the ring possesses while it is in his possession, he does not want to give it up. The novel ends with the destruction of the Fellowship due to the power in which the ring contains. One of the prime facts of the Middle Earth is power. Power is not neutral, but is always evil.

After the dwarves have gone to sleep, Bilbo begins to have second thoughts about going on the adventure, “The Tookishness was wearing off, and he was not now quite sure that he was going on any journey in the morning” (Tolkien 27).
