Was it fate or free will that caused Romeo and Juliet’s death? Romeo and Juliet was written by William Shakespeare in 1594. This play takes place in Verona, Italy during the 1590s and explores the feud between the Capulets and Montagues. In the play, two lovers, Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet, are trying to find a way to avoid an inevitable marriage. Though they were married, no one else knew except the Friar, who contributed to their death. In the end, both Romeo and Juliet end up dead and the feud between the families is over. Some people believe that their deaths were caused by something beyond their control, like fate. Whereas, some believe it was their own choice, like free will. Free will caused Romeo’s and Juliet’s deaths. To begin with, free will is shown when Romeo made the choice to kill Tybalt. Before Romeo made his decision, Tybalt had ended the live of Mercutio, who was a friend of the Montague family. So, Romeo decided to kill Tybalt because of what he did to Mercutio. The text states, “[They fight. Romeo kills Tybalt]” (Shakespeare 3.1.after 137). This is saying that Tybalt and Romeo got into a fight and Romeo took the victory. Romeo did not know that Juliet was not dead, so he made the decision to go to the Apothecary and get a poison that would kill him very quickly. He goes to Juliet’s tomb to say his final goodbye. The play reads, “Here’s to my love! [drinks] O true apothec’ry, / Thy drugs are quick. [kisses her] This with a kiss I die. [dies]” (Shakespeare 5.3.119-120). Romeo drank the poison and kissed Juliet goodbye. Juliet also woke up after and found Romeo. When she did, she killed herself because she didn’t want to live a life without him.
