Women are like glass, they are often thought of as fragile, but are much stronger than one may think. In society men have one role, and women have another and whenever one tries to push those boundaries, there is major backlash. This instills fear, especially in women because of how small the box of ‘perfection’ is, that they must fit into. In the book To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, women and femininity is a large topic. The novel reveals that women are often looked down upon because their gender portrays them as weak.
Lee shows women and femininity can cause young girls to be excluded because they think differently than young boys, as seen through Scout and Jem’s relationship. Early on in Scout’s childhood, many games were played with the main character being her mysterious neighbor, Boo Radley. Scout doesn’t want to upset her father, so she chooses to quit the game, but her older brother, Jem makes fun of her for it. “I was not so sure, but Jem told me I was being a girl, that girls always imagined things, that’s why other people hated them so, and if I started behaving like one, I could go off and find one to play with” (41). After the trial of Tom Robinson, Atticus is explaining to his children why women can not serve on the jury. “‘For one thing, Miss Maudie can’t serve on a jury because she’s a woman-’... ‘I guess it’s to protect our frail ladies from sordid cases like Tom’s’” (221). Even men believe that women are weaker and can’t handle things that men can. Men often try and shelter women from the scary outside world, just like they would with a young child in order to keep their minds innocent and safe.
