Have you wondered what the world would be like if everyone was forced into the government’s opinion of equality? In Kurt Vonnegut Jr.’s story “Harrison Bergeron”, it is the year 2081 and the government has altered the society into being physically and socially equal. The most charming people are left to wear hideous masks, the intelligent are to be equipped with a earpiece that plays ear piercing noises, and the strong people have to wear excessive heavy weights so they resemble the weak. I believe that the society of “Harrison Bergeron” is not truly equal, because no one can be changed unless they want to be. First off, the government had no signs of having handicaps themselves. Everyone should have them not just the people who are beautiful, intelligent, or strong, because true equality would be for everyone to be the same, not just having some people have handicaps and some people not have handicaps. For example when Harrison broke into the dance studio where he was ripping the handicaps off his body, the narrator states "Nobody had ever borne heavier weights". This that most people were born with lighter weights than Harrison which is unfair because if society was truly equal, everyone would be born with equal weight sizes. It is not fair for any person to have heavier weights than another, though it would be equal if everyone had the same size weights. It is not equal for only some people to wear hideous masks and some people to wear ear pieces and some people to wear weights, it would be if every single person had a hideous mask or ear piece or weight that weighed the same. As the narrator was explaining how this society works, he mentioned the ear piece and stated "The transmitter would send out some sharp noise to keep people from thinking clearly.” Keep in mind, transmitters were only equipped by handicapped people but even though others had abnormal brain functionalities, they still had the ability to think freely without getting
