Elizabeth Proctor is a character from the novel The Crucible. Elizabeth Proctor is an example of a mother figure archetype. The definition of a mother figure is someone who guides and cares for others, and they emotionally, spiritually and physically support their family. Elizabeth Proctor is an example of a mother figure archetype because she is a mother and a wife, who cares for her family. She tries to protect her family at all costs. The main question I will use to research is: why is Elizabeth Proctor considered a mother figure? The Crucible: A Play in Four Acts) fits into the stereotypes of the time period of the 16th century. In the time period Elizabeth Proctor lived, the Salem Witch trials were taking place. Elizabeth fits into this because she was an innocent women accused of witchcraft. About 200 people and even some animals were accused during this time. Elizabeth Proctor was of Puritan religion. Puritans did not agree with the common European viewpoint that women were more evil then men. Women were believed to have a bond with the devil because of the biblical belief in Eve's first sin, which makes them more susceptible to sin, according to (“Gender Roles in the Salem Witch Trials"). Elizabeth is very religious and she goes to church even though her husband does not, because the puritans were strict with obeying the Sabbath. She is also similar to this time period because of her husband’s affair. During some research, I found that women of this time period were excepted to tolerate it when their husband had an affair. If a women was caught having an affair, her husband would take her to court. If the wife were found guilty, she would be scented to death. The puritan women married for love. There was no arranged marriages. ("Puritan Women's Rights”). This is similar to Elizabeth because she loved her husband, John. A hero archetype is defined as a person who is admired or idolized for courage and outstanding achievements or noble qualities. Elizabeth and George care for other characters. George cares for Lennie Smalls and Elizabeth care for her husband John, and her family. Even though Lennie and John have done some bad and immoral things in their past, George and Elizabeth still take care of them. One way they can also compare is how they make sure their loved ones are fed. Elizabeth cooks and cleans for John. In the book (“Steinbeck, John. Of Mice and Men”) When George and Lennie stop to camp before they go to the ranch for their job. George makes a fire and shares food with Lennie. Another similarity is that Elizabeth and George both want their loved ones to feel loved. Elizabeth wants John to feel like she is not judging him because of his affair. George does not want anyone to hurt Lennie or make fun of him. Elizabeth and George both want to protect their dignity. Elizabeth tries to protect hers and John's dignity by lying in court about the reason she fired Abigail Williams. George lies about Lennie to their boss when they first meet to protect him from saying something he may regret. Another way they try to protect them is when Elizabeth wants John to lie to the court, and confess to being a witch. George wants Lennie
