Dystopia: The Use of Dystopian Characteristics Throughout George Orwell’s 1984 Imagine every single thing that makes a person who they are completely snatched away from them with nothing left but flesh and bones, no soul nor thoughts, just a human body full of complete nothingness. In George Orwell’s 1984, The Party inflicts this “feeling” on its citizens through the use of psychological manipulation and examples of a totalitarian government. Through the integration of dystopian characteristics throughout the novel, Orwell effectively warns the readers of how oppressive governments control their citizens. To display dystopian characteristics and give readers a clear warning, Orwell comes up with Newspeak: something The Party uses to control and manipulate language so the citizens of Oceania are not able to form a rebellious concept, along with the inability of individuality, peace, and freedom. Newspeak seeks to narrow range of thought and for this reason the government is capable of restraining its citizens with the concept of orthodoxy. Citizens become “unconscious” and do not need to think, allowing the government to think for them. Technology is used to show how a totalitarian government invades the citizens right of freedom. Orwell describes how the citizens of Oceania are completely restricted as a result of telescreens: “ The telescreen received and transmitted simultaneously.
