Dramatic irony is shown throughout the book Oedipus the king. In many instances it makes the reader cringe throughout the book. Oedipus went through many trials which made the world of Sophocles, the reader, and the book characters crumble. There wasn't one person the book did not affect. This book made a real dramatic approach to irony, irony is sometimes funny or odd but in this case it was hurtful and very emotional.

Sophocles was hit hard with the great honor of being the writer of such a great book it probably hurt him not to give this novel a fairy tale ending. In the story it said “ what message from the god.” In saying this it shows that there was a character of supposedly god but sophocles made himself that character because at one wilm of the pen he could take away from the story or give. He made up the characters and watched them grow up at his fingertips, so having to hurt them must have been a difficult task. He may have had many sleepless nights wondering what if.
