To Kill a Mockingbird Courage Essay Have you ever been in a situation that you know is wrong but the only way to get out of the situation is to stand up for what is right and be courageous? Some people think that to be courageous is to do something dangerous, something that can hurt you, or something that is difficult. The true meaning of courage is standing up for what you believe no matter who believes it. In To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, the town of Maycomb is faced with a trial between a black man, Tom Robinson, and a white woman, Mayella Ewell. Tom Robinson is not only going to court to be convicted of what he is accused of but also because the town is racist against the black community. First, “Atticus was appointed to defend Tom Robinson” (Lee 194). Atticus shows courage in this example because he knows that Tom Robinson is innocent but everybody else thinks that Tom is guilty because Tom is Black and the white community is being racist towards that. Second, in Maycomb, there was a rabid dog that was on the loose with a disease that nobody wanted to stop, so Atticus got his gun and killed the dog. This specific example show Atticus demonstrating courage because the dog had Maycomb’s “Usual Disease” which is racism, and everybody in the town is racist, so killing the dog is like ending the racism in the town. Finally, throughout the novel, Atticus stands up for what he believes even though everybody in the town of Maycomb is against what he believes. What Atticus did is the true meaning of courage. Standing up for your beliefs even though they are not popular. Finally, whe Jem’s father was at the jail talking to Tom Robinson, a Lynch Mob comes up to Atticus, and just before they attack Atticus, Jem steps in and saves Atticus and stops the Lynch Mob. This shows courage that Atticus is telling him to have because if someone is doing something to someone, then you should stand up for that person.
