In the novel One flew over the cuckoo's nest by, Ken Kesey.Kesey's character Randle McMurphy,is a character who struggles adhering to rules.Whereas Kesey’s nurse Ratched is one who thrives off making other adhere to the social structures of the ward.Having both of them on the ward causes a cat and dog relationship there's an equal amount of hatred.Nurse ratched hates McMurphy because of his erratic behavior.This poses the question,the conflict between pursuing a personal desire and choosing to conform.Based on the text the idea that is presented is that yes pursional desire is more motivating than conforming.Nurse Ratched's desire is to maintain her control and assert her authority over the men of the ward.Where as McMurphy wants nothing …show more content…

In many cases, looking to the rest of the group for clues for how we should behave can actually be helpful. Other people might have greater knowledge or experience than we do, so following their lead can actually be instructive. There are forms of conformity that works well as a whole.On the other hand the inner battle for one's own goal and self vision is stronger.The type of comfority would be,Informational conformity.This happens when a person lacks knowledge and looks to the group for information and direction.Some of the men on the ward lack mental cabilty so they look to the nurse or later on in the book mcmurphy for ideas and how to act.Cheswick looked p to Mcmurphy he looked to him for strength to stand up to the big nurse.When a heated argument over the distribution of cigarettes breaks out between chiswick and the big nurse.CHeswick looks for help standing up to her from mcmurphy,when mcmurphy doesn't have his back he loses it and gets sent away for a few days when he comes back,he kills himself in the pool by drowing.It is because of the pressure to conform and the presser not to conform that caused cheswick to go over the deep end and kill
