How people look at you is very important in our society. Usually, someone’s character is one of the most important things to them. Whether you have a good character or bad character is how people look at you. If someone is known for doing drugs, some people would be hesitant to be friends with them because they do not agree with what they do. In Harry Potter, Harry has very good character and the traits of compassion, perseverance, and courage help him through the most difficult seven years of his life.
One quality of character is compassion. Harry Potter shows great compassion throughout the Harry Potter series. In the end, he was able to forgive Snape, who made his school years awful, and Dumbledore, the man who betrayed him. This is shown because Harry named one of his children after them. Harry was also ready to die just so his friends wouldn’t have to suffer. He was willing to sacrifice himself for the good of everyone else. Harry also shows perseverance.

Harry demonstrates this one very well. During the first book, he is going after Voldemort already. He is set on Voldemort so no one else has to die. Harry is only a child yet he is willing to go after one of the most powerful wizards ever. It’s not easy at all and even though there were moments when he wanted to give up, Harry always pulled through. Harry kept trying and trying to figure out how to end Voldemort’s life for pretty much the whole series. When he is told he needs to find four Horcruxes, he ends his schooling to go after the Horcruxes so he can end Voldemort’s
Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of others. Compassion and empathy inspire change in a society whether it be changing individual’s usual way of thinking, uniting, or accepting those who are different. Individuals can use their compassion for something to cause a change in someone else’s thought of that thing. Several people have used empathy to bring others feelings together. People can also use empathy to show others to have acceptance towards ones who may not be like themselves.
Character is often the setting stone on what a person is judged upon. For someone to have character, they must noticeably stand out, and do extraordinary tasks that a normal student would not usually do. From school activities to sports clubs, I myself carry unique characteristics that set me apart from other students.
To Kill a Mockingbird is very interesting for the teenage mind because it holds a new idea to this generation. Both racism and compassion were themes of this book. We have not grown up in a country full of racism, so it does not directly affect American teens. However, we have not grown up in a world of compassion either. American tennagers have grown up in a world that you are not expected to conform. This can be an amazing thing, on the other hand, that opens you up to a much more aggressive and negative society than those who just conform. Teens have been taught that they are not to ignore most problems or keep these problems to themselves. If a friend is a subject of what appears to be a mental disorder you are expected to tell on them. However, if a person themselves is demonstrating these behaviors we are taught that it is not okay and we are punished for these behaviors. Therefore these ideas contradict themselves. The only solution is love, empathy, patience, understanding, sympathy, and compassion.
This is why character growth is so important. We can get away with frightened, fool hardy or nerdy heroes. But it is important that they grow. Just as we grow. ‘Flaws are a starting point of imperfection or incompleteness from which a character can grow.’ (Vogler, 2007, p.33). And an underdog character offers a great deal of room for growth. In fact growth is integral to the story. The ‘character must develop in order for the [story] to communicate on a psychological level. (Indick, 2004, p.18). If a character fails at something (which the underdog must do often or they wont be considered an underdog) and then just wallows over it, they wont grow. Harry has to barely escape Voldemort throughout the series so that the stakes are highest during the final confrontation.
Just to quickly run through the two previous books; Harry Potter is a wizard, who’s parents were killed by the worst dark wizard ever known. The reason why Harry Potter is still around, is because Lord Voldemort failed to kill Harry. His spell hit Harry, but then backfired on Voldemort taking all of his powers with him. Harry is so famous for two things. Withstanding the powers of Lord Voldemort, and, taking him back in to the underworld in hiding. In the first book, Harry receives a letter from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. He’s eventually allowed to go, and spends the next six months there learning magic, getting into trouble, and trying to solve mysteries of his past, and the school. In the second book, Harry goes back to his second year at Hogwarts, and gets into more trouble, figures out many astonishing mysteries and learns loads more magic. His best friends in the two books consist of Ron and Hermione (two of his fellow wizard students) and Hagrid the gamekeeper who was expelled from Hogwarts but allowed a job as the gamekeeper.
Society tends to misjudge people base on their appearances instead of their personality. As it’s shown on Cyrano de Bergerac story everyone misjudges people. Cyrano was ashamed of the way he looked, especially with his enormous nose that made him stand out. People didn’t care if Cyrano got his feelings hurt they thought he was a cruel person. Its bad when people tends to misjudge people without even knowing them but they just judge them by their looks instead of their personality. People shouldn’t be ashamed of the way they look and it shouldn’t stop them from accomplishing their goals and express their feelings towards the people they like.
In addition, the way people treat you influences your character or personality a lot. This is shown in Frankenstein’s monster when he has an idea to make a young friend. He felt like a young clean soul that has not been tarnished with all of the judgements of society would be a perfect individual to befriend. This is shown when the story states, “I drew his hand forcibly from his face and said, "Child, what is the meaning of this? I do not intend to hurt you; listen to me." He struggled violently. "Let me go," he cried; "monster! Ugly wretch! You wish to eat me and tear me to pieces. You are an ogre. Let me go, or I will tell my papa." (Shelley, 170). Just because of the way the monster looked to the child, he viewed him as evil and wanted to get his papa. All the creature wanted to accomplish was to attempt to befriend a young boy to show the people that he wasn’t an evil being. The fact that the young boy treated the creature as a mutant made him want to run and get help. The boy didn’t care that all the creature wanted was to be friends so that somehow society would treat him as an
What comes to mind when one thinks of Harry Houdini? There are many things one could say, magic, escapes, perseverance, hard work, determination, fame, etc. Houdini was a master magician as well as a superb escape artist. (Harry 1) Houdini was one of the most determined men in history. He was so obsessed with achieving his goal that no matter what got in his way he pushed it aside. Even if it were his parents he would ignore them. Many things got in his way but he was so focused that he ignored them. This is the story of the greatest Magician that ever lived.
The characters through out this story have a good attitude and then sometimes they would have a bad attitude. The characters in Harry Potter are witches and wizards. All 11 year old witches and wizards go to Hogwarts. Some of the character are named Draco Malfoy, Neville Longbottom, Hermione Granger, Ron Weasley, Fred and George Weasley, Albus Dumbledore, Setheres Snape, Professor Mcgonagall, And of course Harry potter.
To begin, one lesson recurs throughout the entire story: Never give up. In every book in the series, Harry is faced with challenges that almost anyone would back down from. Whether he is “The Chosen One” or just very brave, Harry stands up to anything in his way. Perhaps the largest of these challenges is the death of his mentor and father figure, Albus Dumbledore. Harry and his friends also must rob Gringotts bank, a feat only attempted in history by the foolish.
Over the course of his school year he most overcome enemies, strange teachers, qudditch, and finding out that after all this time Voldermort is still out to kill him. Along the way he makes good friends with Ron and Hermione, both who are sorted into the same house as Harry. Of the four houses, Harry is sorted into Gryffindor, "Where dwell the brave at heart, their daring, nerve, and chivalry set Gryffindors apart." (Insert Citation) To be placed into the brave or courageous house is one way that Rowling was able to establish the theme of courage throughout the film. In one scene of the film Harry, Ron and Hermione must face a fully-grown troll, but instead of running away, the three friends battle the troll on their own. The many challenges Harry faces through the film showcase that he is more courageous than most first year students. Over the span of his first year with the help from his friends, Harry defeats a troll, uncovers a hidden secret in the castle, and that one teacher may be out to destroy him. The different character actions of Harry show how courage is a central theme in the film. Instead of running and hiding from his challenges he instead faces them head on. In the transition from book to film, Rowling tried to keep as much of the courageous actions of Harry that would fit in a two-hour
“It is our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities” (Rowling 333). This quote, from the beloved character Albus Dumbledore in the book The Chamber of Secrets by author J.K. Rowling, counsels young wizard, Harry Potter, about the importance of true character. Throughout the Harry Potter series, Harry struggles with internal conflict about whether his powers are meant for good or evil. Dumbledore assures Harry his powers are intended for good because of the choices he makes. Harry learns who he truly is through the challenges he faces and the decisions that follow.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows was written by J. K. Rowling and is the seventh and final book in the Harry Potter series. The book is about a seventeen-year-old wizard, named Harry Potter, who has to travel all over England to find things that will help him defeat the evil wizard, Lord Voldomort. The main theme/moral of the entire series is good will always triumphs over evil. In every book, even when it looks like evil is going to win, good always triumphs in the end.
In the book, Harry was challenged often by Malfoy, they were pretty equal opponents. When Malfoy tried to turn Harry or anyone else into a hideous creature he failed. Rowling’s pretrial of why he was not able to successfully turn them into a hideous creature, education. Malfoy had not had enough experience with the spells because he was always trying to get Harry. Without the proper training there was no way that Harry could lose. He spent a lot of time with the teachers and other adults learning and training to be the very best that he could learn patience and the proper techniques. This made him successful, though the novels you see Harry grow, learn and struggle but he never gave up. Getting his education in wizardry was the key to his success. Through him Rowling shows that nothing can be accomplished without being educated on the subject matter first. She knew education was important which is why she decided to attend college at the Exeter University School of public research. She studied French, Greek and German graduating in
